I'm trying to figure out how Coachman did the rear twin bed layout, specifically for the center kitchen model. Was there a frame for each bed? Steel? How long and wide were the beds? Did all twin bed units (w/center kitchen) have a 5" wide pull-out pantry? Did your feet go under the hanging wardrobes where the drawers normally are?

I know some of you may have converted your twin beds to a full size mattress, so do you have any of the old parts laying around?

Just toying with some ideas,

John

Hi John

My pantry was added and the kitchen was modified (shortened) because my PO was
tall and he needed more leg room.

The twin beads were just typical coachmen wood frames with plywood on top. The
drivers side twin bed dimension was the allowable length from the rear of the
coach to the bathroom wall and the width was from the coach sidewall to the edge
of the bath wall. Drivers side was about the same in width and length. Feet
went under the cabinets.

You could make them as wide as you want (example 36") and have a minimal walkway
between them, such as approx 19". If I recall, the cabinet between the heads of
the twin beds that we had was about 20-22".

If your coach has the double bed where you sleep side to side, then I can see
how they had drawers under the cabinets.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

Rob Mueller has suggested I might be able to help with pictures. I'll try and post shortly after lunch although there may be some on my photosite accessed below this message.

Of course, being a Royale, all bets are off. My floorplan, at least in the rear looks more like the standard twin rear. The passenger side twin on mine deadheads into the rear of the coach and into a double closet. The driver side twin deadheads into the rear of the coach and into the dry bath. Both beds are simple plywood boxes with cushions - the passenger side has the fresh water tank and the driver side has things associated with the air compressor system. Ken Henderson can probably give you a more technical explanaton.

Between the two narrow twins is a built in night stand at the rear of the coach. 2 or 3 drawers with a lower compartment that has a circuit breaker, my charging system and some other unknown stuff.

These beds are actually best used by thin midgets. My next project is to convince Ken to help me with the modification of the passenger side twin so I can at least stretch out. So far I've had a suggestion that I just cut two holes in the closet with a Sawzall. I'm not sure what that would do for resale.

Actually, I think all joking aside, this modification will add value to the coach by providing a bed for taller people that doesn't have to be folded down every night. It was a big issue for me.

Actually I just opened my photo album and the pictures are probably about as good as I could do. Look toward the last half dozen or so pictures and you'll see what I mean. If you need pictures of the box frames themselves, I'll open them up and do my best.

Ray, Stick,

Thanks for the information. Stick, what do those twin mattresses measure in length? Are they a regular twin bed mattress?

If we were to shorten the hanging wardrobe (closet), and remove the drawer unit under it, we could lengthen our rear dinette seating area to 73" - tho I'm thinking that's still not going to be enough for a 6 footer (me).

Your setup is a little different than our center kitchen Royale, but I think with some other modifications, a rear twin setup is feasible.

Thanks - the pics helped. And Ray, I've got pics of yours from right after you bought it.

John,

I'm going to chime in here as I slept in Stick's Royale (formerly John
Sharpe's) while I was working on Double Trouble in Humble last year.

The mattress measurement is not what you're interested in, you want to know
the measurement from the closet wall to the rear wall and on a rear twin
Royale such as Sticks it's 74 inches. On Avions' it's 75 inches, and on
Edgemont's it's 77 inches.

Here's my experience at home we have a Queen size bed which is 80 inches
long and I sleep great, in the five inch shorter Avion I sleep OK. In
Stick's Royale I did not sleep as well. I am 6' 1 1/2" tall @ 250 lb.

Rob M.

Well, thanks Rob. You have spent a lot more time in that coach than I have. I'm 6'5" and sleep diagonally with my feet protruding into the hall at the 3"-4" overhang that is wider than the closet. A couple of glasses of red wine and an Ambien helps a lot, but I'm ready to start cutting on the closet. If I do that, it'll call for a new mattress. If I get one, she'll want one also.
