Reference is not to Some Other Brand...
It is technically a Hex Head Cap Screw, but I have called this one lots of other things.

I got my trans and final drive down.

Several of you suggested that I take the FD and trans down separately. Nice thought.....

Someplace along the line somebody put screws in all the holes.

Look for the circle:

There is NO Fing Way to get that babe out of there. It will only get loose with a box wrench with the whole thing on the floor. (Yes, I tried all the extensions u-joints and floppy extensions and crowfeet and I even borrowed a crowfoot flare nut wrench from a friend and could not get the needed 1/24th of a turn to get it loose enough to do any good.

I asked Manny. Summary - leave it out. The hole was there and someone though it needed it.

It will be out and the trans and final drive will go back in as separate parts.

Hi Matt

I have gotten that screw out by using a 3/8 drive socket, a 3/8 universal joint and an 18" extension. You have to try the socket in different positions in order to allow the U joint to turn at the angle needed to turn the screw.

It isn't easy but it can indeed be done. A lot of patience helps.

I left the bolt out when I put the final drive back in.

Matt,
When I did the FD, I took the LH wheel well liner out, then removed the LH exhaust manifold. Very easy to get to the bolt then - it came right out. All went back together in reverse - no problem.

Do you need me to come up there and do it for you? Very Happy

Matt,

When I had to rebuild the engine and transmission before getting home with
it in '98 -- before I knew ANYTHING about GMC's, I put that bolt in.

Two years later Darryl Winterfeld was removing the FD preparatory to
removing the 425 to replace the cracked torque converter. He did not have
kind words for me when he found that bolt. And after I loaned him my
then-unusual GearWrench ratchet, he didn't want to let me leave with it. It
took only a few minutes to pull with that.

I've never installed another one.

I appreciate the offer John, but with the Trans and FD on the barn floor it is not much of a problem. The manifold is not the stopper, the crankcase is in the way. Unfortunately, with the flash where it is, the crankcase side is in the shadow of the exhaust manifold. I wondered why there is no reference to this fastener in the GMC manuals.
