I am trying to fine tune my so aire furnace. I have not been an owner of the GMC for long, and i just started firing up the furnace. Everything seems to work fine, but it is creating a bit of black soot on the outside.

So when i went to dial in the primary air to fine tune the flame, from what looked to be partly yellow to the blue, the primary air just spun.

after taking out the burner, everything looks in good shape. not rusted, and fairly clean. however the stops on the primary air are broken off.

is there anybody that sells a new burner?

I do not really want to get into replacing the furnace if I don't have to.

Jon: The original Sol Air furnace has not been made in many years, and I doubt that any parts are available anywhere. The furnace has a very bad reputation for combustion chamber leaks, which can be deadly. Wally Anderson, who is a fantastic mechanic and can repair most anything on the GMC tried and even he gave up with repairing the Sol Air. A few guys still run them (I think Emery Stora does) with success, but mostly the advice is to replace the unit with a safer, more modern, unit.

There is a time to replace most things, and a 35 year old furnace is well past it's useful life, especially considering the deadly nature of the thing if it leaks. It is what I would do If I were you.

Jon,
The Sol Aire furnace is obsolete and very few parts if any are
available for the unit. I just threw out everything I had for the
furnace last month. I have a sol aire in my 75 avion that is going to
the junk when it comes out . Your furnace is 35 years old and need to
be replaced. IMHO you run the risk of injuring yourself if you think
that you can fix or repair the old unit. I would suggest a Suburban
NT-30SP or Suburban SF-30. Both are on sale here:

Wasn't there an issue with the way the intake and exhaust are routed out
the body of the coach? I dont' really want to cut new holes. There's a
lot of us with these original furnaces that need to change them. Is
anyone fabricating a kit to adapt them?

That is the obstacle that keeps me from changing mine but I'm always
hoping that there's a more simple solution. I don't trust my Sol-Aire
enough to sleep with it on, but it sure gets the coach warm in a hurry
when it works.

thanks for the useful links. I am really hoping not to have to replace it this year. but I guess I will just have to figure something out.

I do have the coach equipped now with a combo co and propane alarm, and I have also put a battery powered co alarm in back, and my 110 volt gas/co alarm I had in my house(had two downstairs)
as I have started working with the furnace.

I used it all one weekend with no alarms going off in the coach. just the black soot on the outside.

I do also use an electric heater when plugged into 110. just the furnace as an extra to keep up.

I am only hoping to get 4 more nights(two weekends) hunting here in MN out of it this year before it goes into storage. but where i hunt we have no 110. we run a generator most of the time, however shut off the generator over night. usually borrowing someone else's camper. this year is the first year with the GMC. actually just got it in august.

The information on these things and the help from everybody is unbelievable. I have had plenty of projects over the years and never seen such support. Thanks!
