Anybody hear this rumor? I got a call yesterday from a gentleman from Canada interested in my Tracker. Said he owned an original Coca Cola GMC, with 43.000 miles, a 455 and he was the second owner and that it was original and perfect.
He also said that he just bought a 250,000 square foot factory in Alberta Province, and a smaller factory in Beatrice, Nebraska and all the molds for the GMC and was in the midst of moving them from Louisiana by railroad to Canada and would be started in manufacturing of a modern GMC.
He said he would be sending me an email shortly.

Explorer Van Conversion Company Also Has Molds {or did have} ~
The Dad delivered GMC Motorhomes during the '70s and they actually
had an assembly line in their Conversion Plant On U S 30 West,
Warsaw Indiana ~
W spent about 4 hours touring that plant in the summer of '96
{I really like their Seat Assembly Line}
The Son has now taken over and has no enterest in continuing the GMC Motorhome Referbs ~

If true, best of luck to him. I've heard this song before tho', so I'm
definitely from Missouri on this one. The obstacles to restarting GMC
production are huge.
Also, if the world's largest vehicle manufacturer(at the time) couldn't make
money on them...

Explorer also lost lots of money in their attempt. Warranty costs killed them.
My understanding is that the old molds are of little use for small scale
manufacturing. They're a small piece of that style of manufacturing and you
have to have the remainder of the injection machinery to use them. I would
think hand-layup would work better for small scale. Slower production rate for
sure, but much less capital intensive. I've also heard that all the original
molds are in pretty bad shape - most have been stored outside and the cost of
refurb prohibitive.

I wonder if he bought the equipment rom the eBay auction. The reports we
heard here at the time stated that the tooling is in terrible condition.
It would be nice to see someone succeed at such an endeavor but I'm not
gonna hold my breath 'til then.

I'm all about rooting for this guy but this seems like the way to make a big fortune into a little one in a hurry. oh well. it would be nice to have someone making front and rear end caps so we don't have to cannibalize another coach if something happens to one of ours.

Certain year Trackers (and Sidekicks) make better Towds than pretty much anything new. The side benefit is they, and the parts for them, are much cheaper.
I once saw a survey that most millionaires do NOT buy new cars. They buy VERY good used cars.

It pains me to say this but any new manufacture GMC would be best to rely heavily on overseas manufactured components to keep costs down. There is a company in Taiwan which is currently making univody chassis for replica 68 cobra fast back mustangs and also some F body replicas. IIRC cost was between 9-13k and all you had to add was drivetrain, suspension, and interior and you were good to go. So any new GMC would be benifitted from such reproduction infrastructure to keep costs down IMHO. It would really be great since ot couls fill a slot between the boxy class C's and Massive Class A pushers...

Since I'm in the market for a toad, which years of Trackers and Sidekicks make good toads, and why?? I would think the later years would be best because of more safety features and perhaps lower mileage.

I just rigged my HHR to be a towd. It's very nice if a bit on the heavy side. But it rigs easy, it sets up easy, and it allows for a lot of functional space and use as a daily driver. I've loved my HHR as a daily for years and it was very convenient as a towd.

The early ones are lighter, but they are more of a bare bones affair. While the Automatics have to have the 4x4 transfer case to tow four down, an early two wheel drive manual Tracker/Sidekick is one of the lightest towds. (But if you are going that bare bones, you might as well get a VW Bug.) The Tracker/Sidekicks get a little safer and less bare bones as the years go by -- but these features add weight. It is up to you what features are worth what weight. Keep in mind, the more weight the more you'll need towd brakes and the like.
We have a 1995 two door automatic 4x4 with an after market hard top. It is used more as around town transport than it is used as a towd. For our purposes, I think it might have been better to go with the four door. Much more space for not much more weight. I am thinking of getting 16 inch wheels for it so I can rotate my older (6 year old) GMC tires to it. (Hard to that with a Bug.)

called rust !
As for setting up a factory to make 'new' GMC's, Bull Droppings flow
