This weekend I am flying to Macon, GA to pick up my second GMC, a Birchaven with a 500 Cad engine, Applied GMC 3.70 final drive, instrument panel upgrade etc. My first GMC is a 76 Royale which will soon be for sale. Will be driving back to the Seattle area, almost 3,000 miles. I am taking a few tools, my son (a real mechanic as opposed to me, an amateur), AAA card, credit card, Black list, Jim Bounds' phone number. I will keep track of the mileage and report how it drives when I get back.
Current route plan is Macon - Atlanta - Nashville - Kansas City - Lincoln - Salt Lake City - Boise - Pendleton - Portland - Sequim. I would appreciate any comments if anyone has experience with these highways or possibly a better route through the Rockies.
I am hoping for a pleasant and uneventful road trip.

Also,,,have 120volts,,,big driveway and water. garage if we need work done and its raining. Much more quite than w-mart.,,,PL

Take I-70...far more scenic than I-80. Stop at Arches National Park (Moab, UT). Then I-15 North to I-80 in SLC. If time wasn't an issue, you could take a route even further south, and loop through Albuquerque, Roswell NM, Cortez CO, and up to Arches NP, then I-15 and I-80.

It has been snowing along I-70 west of Denver in the ski areas. You might not want to take that at this time of year.

Salt Lake is worth seeing! The valley is beautiful this time of year, and you could drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon perhaps, or go to Park City. The world's biggest open-pit copper mine is on the west side of the valley. Then there's the Great Salt Lake, and the buffalo on Antelope Island (accessible from a causeway just north of Bountiful, UT). The 2002 Olympics museum sits next to the University of Utah stadium, kitty-corner from the VA hospital. If you're there on a Thursday, you can go at 7:00 (or is it 8:00?) to choir practice at the Salt Lake Mormon Temple (actually, the round-roofed Assembly Hall next door). All the singing and none of the suits-required dress code as on Sunday. Park City is just east of SLC on I-80 and it is worth seeing the ski hills and the Olympic ski jump, etc. Red Butte Garden up above (and slightly south) of the University is a beautiful botanic park, quite striking. You might also consider driving, instead of on the main freeways, up to
the NW region from Salt Lake City through Boise ID, Bend OR, etc. Again, more scenery (assuming that time is not too critical).

Except that we are starting to get snow on I70 between Denver and Grand
Junction. Not much yet but you might want to check before you start up
the hill out of Denver. And yea, the trip from Cheyenne to almost SLC
is rather "bland" ;^)

Last October We Were In Twin Falls Idaho with our GMC
and we had a nice trip by using the following routes;
Columbus Ga to Birmingham Al --> Used Hwy 280 W
Birminghan To Memphis Tn --> Used I-22 W
Memphis To Amerillo Tx --> Used I-40 W
Amerillo To Dumas Tx --> Used US 287 N
Dumas To Raton NM --? Used US 87 N
Raton To Chyenne Wy --> Used I-25 N
Chyenne To Salt Lake City Ut --> Used I-80 W
Salt Lake City To Twin Falls Id --? Used I-84 W
It was a nice trip on Interstates and some 4 lanes

If you have to go I-80 then there is always the giant ancestral head and visitor center at Laramie WY (www.roadsideamerica.com/story/8450)
You can hit Park City half way between Rock Springs and SLC.
