That's what I meant to say in my previous post on the subject.

This group has been invaluable during the top end refresh on my Revcon. And i am grateful.

The issue with the distributor rotation was just a speed bump along the way.

One other question,

How long before I can be reasonably confident I got the gaskets on right?

100 miles? 1000? 10,000 ?

THanks

Dave,
I suppose anything can happen, but my experience has been if something got slightly out of place on assembly it usually is soon enough and big enough to be really disheartening. So, I would think not much more than an hour or so of running would do it. Congrats on getting it running and good luck.

I normally will test run an engine on a test stand with a pressurized
coolant system that I grafted from a fishing boat heat exchanger. This will
tell me if I have any coolant leaks around the intake manifold, water pump,
heads etc, and if there is any compression or combustion leaks, they will
show up in the closed coolant loop very quickly. It is much easier to repair
these problems when the engine is on a test stand than it is when it has
been installed in the engine bay. I know that in your case you didn't remove
the engine from the bay. Check very carefully around the water pump shaft
and the weep hole that faces the bottom of the water pump. This area around
the pump is also prone to leak oil from the water pump hold down screws, the
front oil seal, and the intersection between the oil pan and front cover.
Also check the intake manifold to cylinder heads for signs of water leaks as
well as the thermostat housing. After the engine has been run for the first
time, letting it set overnight undisturbed and then recheck the intake
manifold fastener torque. Wipe the ends of the manifold clean and check them
in a couple of days for signs of oil seeps there. If you use the blue head
gaskets, resist the temptation to retorque the heads. They seal up very well
and their instructions are specific. Do not retorque. If you didn't replace
pistons, rings, bearings, you should be good to go. Keep listening for signs
of loose rocker saddles or lifter noise for the first few hundred miles. If
you have done your work right, these engines are very reliable, Watch for
signs of excessive oil consumption, (more than a qt in 600 miles) Sometimes
when you restore good compression to a high mileage engine, they will pump
oil past the rings. Probably are more things to look out for like belts and
leaking hoses but if something specific comes up, let me know & I'll try to
be helpful.

Thanks. It was just gaskets. The engine has only 25,000 miles and looked beautiful.

So the most likely source of failure will be some blunder like assuming the distributor rotates clockwise.
