For those who have not followed the saga; SOme months ago i took off the top of my engine to change a the gaskets.

I've worked through lots of question on this forum. Special thanks to Rob M. and Bob B who wrote to me offline with lengthy detailed instructions.

My last question involved guessing TDC and timing without visible timing marks.

I was going with trial and error but then my tired battery croaked. I needed a fresh battery for all the extra cranking involved.

Finally, new battery installed, time to try again. lotsa' cranking, lotsa' coughing, lotsa' backfiring- darn, it should not be this hard.

a little googling on carb backfire.

Double check firing order- 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Firing order is correct, BUT IN THE WRONG DIRECTION .

Now for the cool part- i put the wires on right, and it jumps to life instantly !!

THank you

Funny you should mention this. Some time ago I bought a new high performance distributor from a speed shop for an early Olds engine that came with the advance working back wards the backfire that time cost me a bent rod. Several years later I sent the 455 olds distributor in for a rebuild to a speed shop and it came back advancing in reverse? Sure makes you wonder, not every body has a Chevy.

Exact same problem in Early Honda Civic (first one sold in New England, after the initial introduction at the New York Auto Show).
Reference book had the rotational diagram printed backwards. Took two days to figure that one out. Painful.

Guys, A real simple test I learned long ago the hard way. Grasp the rotor
and twist it slightly. When it springs back, that is opposite the normal
direction of travel. As the rpms increase, the rotor on GM distributors
advance slightly to more perfectly align with the lugs in the cap. Use this
tip in good health and fair weather.

For distributors of GMC vintage, (not fixed, electronic ones) assuming it's the right distributor in the engine, the direction the rotor turns semi-freely (against the springs in the advance mechanism) is the same direction the distributor turns. Also, if you shot a bullet into the vacuum advance can through the line, the bullet is traveling the direction of distributor rotation. Helps for people with poor memories, like me . . .
