I left off last week with a very hard brake pedal. taking my full
force to initiate the brakes. so this weekend I began to investigate
the Brake Booster. I could hear a vac leak from behind the master
cylinder, where the push rod comes from the booster to the MC. So i
need a new Booster...
a few questions.
The Leigh Harrison Sensitized brake booster, and GMC vendor
Sensitized brake booster the same? If not one better than the other?
or can i just pick up one from a local parts store?
when removing the booster (arch has a great writeup) do i need to
remove the MC and re-bleed the brakes , or can i leave the lines
attached and "prop up" the MC? (whould bve nice to leave!!)
any other hints would be great! I should be able to try tis next weekend...

No, if you do not open the lines on the MC itself, you will not need to
bleed the brakes. The booster can be manipulated out of the opening with
only the minimal amount of adjectives and verbs. the problem is getting to
the booster fasteners from the dash side of the deal. Not impossible, but
having double jointed wrists would be helpful.

I doubt anyone here can give you a comparison between Leigh's and Jim's sensitized brake boosters. Why would anyone try both unless they had trouble with one of them?
I got one from Jim K and installed it.
No, you do not need to disconnect the lines or bleed the system when you are done.
The amount of brake pedal force require is greatly diminished with the new booster and I have great brakes with little pedal effort. It takes less effort than stopping my daily driver vehicles of a Colorado and a Blazer.
I highly recommend Jim K's sensitized booster.
To my knowledge you can not find them in the local autoparts stores. Jim K. has them rebuilt locally to his specs. You need to return the old one for core credit so it can be rebuilt for the next customer.
I can not tell you about Leigh's. I have never tried it.

David,
And I have one from Jim B and "highly recommend" it too!
Now all we need is someone with Lee's to chime in that his is great too and
you'll know EXACTLY which one to buy! NOT! ;-)

Jim B's sensitized brake booster made a huge difference in the way my GMC drives.
The standard brake booster requires too much pedal pressure. With the sensitive booster I can generally use my big toe to drive (I'm usually barefoot) as the pedal pressure is like on a modern car. The daily drivers I can compare the GMC to are a late-model Ford Escape or Toyota Avalon and the brake pedal pressure is now comparable, if not slightly more sensitive.
If you've got the original brake booster I would replace it just because it's 30-something years old. The benefit of a lighter pedal is in addition to the added reliability of a new booster. Personally I wasn't going to take a chance of an old booster failing and possibly risking an accident due to inadequate braking power. I replaced it at MY convenience before the old one failed.
Just my opinion!

Sensitized booster is one of the steps in modernizing the GMC.
Other than return shipping, I do not know how much it matters, but from looking at the websites, JimK's (Applied GMC) booster is rebuilt. Leigh's and JimB's (CoOp) both seem to be new units.

When I get that far down my list, I have it in my head that my new booster will come from JimB. Most of my other parts come from JimK.
You do not get this better performance for nothing... As it works on vacuum, make sure you have a vacuum pump when installing a sensitized booster.

Sounds like its first a new vac pump (mine died) and later
the booster. At least for me.
Good info, thanks

Mike,
AFAIK You do not have to have a remote vacuum pump for the sensitized
booster too work.
IMHO it is a good idea to have one that has two check valves in the bottom
(below the master cylinder) one goes to the engine the other to the vacuum
pump.
If you're REALLY anally retentive you can put a reservoir in line with the
one that goes to the engine!
