Well, I took SunnyB and FischenDog on an overnighter to visit my parents in SyracuseIN. About a 180 mile roundtrip. Filled SunnyB up before I left and the gas gauge never went below full. Wow, that's much better milage than when we went to DuQuion and back I'll tell you. Laughing Looks like something else for Dean to fix. Confused She did run sweet tho the whole way out and back. Very Happy Safe travels everyone.

You probably have an open circuit in the sender wire, check the body connector along the frame rail. Mine had corroded out so I cut it and replaced it with weather shielded quick connects...

Not to be negative here, but the fuel gauge aint exactly even CLOSE to being an acccurate indicator of MPG. I determine MPG by letting a very-very slow running gas pump click off on fillup, note my mileage on the odometer, driving about 100 miles, and fill up slow again to click off. I use the difference in the odometer readings, and 2nd pump quantity, to calculate MPG. I can get 9 mpg if I drive at 55 hiway.

My gauge indicates full all the time. When it starts to move I estimate I have probably just under a third of a tank(s) . My gas gauge I only use to determine an approximate comparison between the two tanks, and when either one indicates a quarter or less I stop to get gas. I also moved the source line for my Onan Microlite to the front tank bacause I park my coach facing down the 15 degree incline in my driveway.

I record every mile I drive and every drop of gas I put in the coach. If we
don't use the Onan and if I drive reasonable without my foot in the carb, our
mileage pretty much averages 8.9, doesn't matter if we're towing the Harley,
traveling with full or empty tanks, it's 8.9. I'm good with that and I don't
intend on spending a ton of money to make a small gain.

Last Year I Got GREAT Gas Mileage On A Trip ~

I drove my Towd {5 sp Hyundai Accent} 785 miles and got 35,7 MPG ~
We took the longer, more scenic 860 mile route back
and when we got back home
we found that for the Round Trip Of 1645 miles

The TOWD averaged 75.9 MPG !
{it was towed on the 860 mile leg} LOL

~ Joe ~

* I drove the towd 785 miles West {avg 35.7 mpg}
and drove the GMC Motorhome 860 miles East {avg 9.6 mpg}

Driving eastbound after we filled up on I-40 in Ft Smith Arkansas
with Cruise Control at 55 MPH we stopped and filled up next on
I-22 in Fulton Mississippi ~
We Averaged 12.6 MPG for that leg of the trip
thus easing the pain of getting 6 MPG in the Mountains ~

Thanks KeithV, you got my message correct. Just trying to add some levity to yet another thing that needs to be addressed/fixed. The gauge worked fine up until this short trip. The gauge should have dropped at least alittle by time I got to SquirrelyQ (Syracuse) and more so by time I got all the way back home. It was a cool tho misguided feeling thinking that SunnyB was getting such good MPGs. Of course I knew better and thought, "not another thing to fix". Back in '07 when she was "new", we did the "paperwork" of figuring out mpgs, fully loaded and running light. After seeing the results, we decided to just get in, drive and enjoy her. Damn the mpgs! Razz And that is what we do. ( For those curious few out there. Dean got better mpgs than me. Sorry, but I love passing SOBs. Love hearing/feeling those secondaries kick in Shocked ) To all who have given info about what the problem could be, a big thanks as it makes finding the problem easier. So anyone who has fixed this situation please sound off as we love info that we can use. ps I feel like one must have a sense of levity when owning a GMC or it could "drive" you crazy with all it's "issues". Very Happy again I say THANKS for all the info/input/opinions

If anyone wants/needs correct milage readings
a GPS is a good option.

I had a similar gas tank gauge issue on one tank. The late Denny Allen told me to check the wires where they went from the frame into the body along the drivers side, fairly near the fuel selector valve. He said they commonly break there. I tugged on them and one came down in my hand where it had broken off up inside the wall behind the couch. That fix requires the wall panel just to the front of the kitchen cabinets (in my rig) to be removed for access to the broken wires.

Have fun, but if you don't bother to fix it, your milage will be better, that is until you run out.

I just repaired mine recently by cutting a small triangle (about 3" x 3" from the left bottom corner of the panel under my couch. First I tied a string onto the three wires and was able to hook the wires through the small opening and pull them up to where I could splice some longer wires to them. Then I retied the string and pulled the new wires through the hole to under the motorhome. Then I cut the longer wires to the length needed and soldered them to the wires going to the tank senders and to the selector valve and used heat shrink tubing over the splices.
