Saw the post and thought that the filter kit looked like a pretty good deal.
The Jegs site has one picture which gives dimensions. the kit has a 3"drop from the carb top mounting face. A quadrajet is approx 3 1/4 inches tall at this point. Measured on the bench here in Ft. Worth. This means the airfilter installed is 1/4 inch above the base of the carburator.
Called Dad In S.A. had him see if he could place a 22 inch (total diameter of the housing) diameter circle 1/2 inch (carb 1/4"+spacer 1/4") above the carb mount face on the engine. Not a chance;it will be deep into the valve covers with no place for the 4" dual tubes to fit. Does not appear to fit on a stock carb location (height) in the GMC coach. I would have purchased it had I though it would fit. Nice looking part for the money. Might work for a normal height manifold. Measure carefully before buying!
I will also use a tube to the stock airfiler housing. The single tube should handle the airflow a stock motor requires. The most restrictive area appears to be the stock snorkle tube itself.
Hope this helps
Hope Dad was measuring correctly as well.

Was there a hose on the air cleaner snorkle from the factory? I see the addaptor on the end but have not seen a coach with the factory hose (if there was one) and where did it originate by the grill? was there a funnel type end for it? If there was a hose I'm guessing it was that black spiral stuff that had sort of a cloth type fiber in it and the plastic snap clamps on the end. I'm envisioning its the same stuff that they used on the big Pontiac Grand Prix and TransAms of the era, if it in fact was on there. Someone must know.....

John--I'm pretty sure none of the GMC's had a factory hose to the inlet snout of the aircleaner.

I agree with Bob. Never seen one with a factory installed snorkle hose on
either the 455 or 403 engines. There have been plenty of examples during the
same years on a number of High performance GM products like the SS cowl
induction, Buick Gran Sport and the last couple of years in the 442's.
Pontiac seemed to favor tri-power setups except after the smog laws set in.
They were very interested in quick warmups, so they had thermactor valves in
air cleaners that sucked in air from the exhaust manifolds as well as those
huge crossover passages in the intake manifolds. All that stuff was for the
purpose of fast warmup to get the choke off as quickly as possible to
eliminate excessive unburned fuel in the tailpipe, ie; emissions, not
performance. Funny, trucks and motorhomes were exempt from much of those
laws in that time period, but they used what was available from ordinary
production parts to make the GMC.

I have a question about the use of remote air intakes:
Does it make the cabin any quieter while driving? I sure do hear a lot of intake noise, especially while accelerating, with the stock set up.
Thanks

I don't think the Jegs setup will work with HEI as the GM aircleaner had the center hole offset to move the cleaner forward and clear the big HEI. Actually warm air promotes better combustion as better fuel vaporization. Cold air is denser so more maximum power. The factory setup with the preheat tube gave you the best of both worlds, believe it or not, those engineers actually did know something. Best blend of low emissions, fuel economy and power.

Used to do that with my 77 elcamino in high school. Sounded cool. My ex 99 burban got a K+N filter with snorkel all the way to the throttle body. Thought it would help it breathe and get some more yank out of it. Don't know about the breathing or the yank but it sure made the intake noisy. Hope to make the intake on the GMC functional with fresh cool air without the racket.

Neil, one of the first things I did back in 04 was to move the air intake to the grille. Really quietened the air sucking roar on my coach. Should have had you drive it while we were out there. One does not hear the roar inside now. If you are outside or have the driver's window open you will hear it. Funny how we used to flip the breather lid on my dad's GMC pickup on Saturday nights just so we could hear it. Now we want it quieter. I have the breather right behind the grille, not a "scoop".

You should hear a WOT northstar caddy at 6000 rpm. Now that is sweet.
