The plan is to provide a cable TV hookup for the coach somewhere in the generator compartment (or close to it). What are peoples thoughts on an over the air antenna? I am not interested in satellite TV for the coach. We live in an area that has zero over the air signal but figure we will be near civilization when we travel. For the amount of TV we watch, that will be good enough. There is one on the coach now but it is really beat up and probably came with the coach.

I think it sounds like a good idea to put in both a cable connection and an antenna. With the new, digital signals, there is HD programming available over the air (if you're in reasonable distance from a station), and it doesn't cost anything.

I'm trying to decide if I should go with a crank-up antenna, or mount a small, batwing antenna that I've had sitting around for many years. I like the idea of the sleek look and not having to worry about not lowering the antenna before driving off, but I haven't had the chance to hook it up to see what sort of a signal it pulls in.

Would it make more sense to put the cable connection somewhere other than in the generator compartment to try to avoid potential electrical interference. Perhaps some of our more electrically educated members will chime in.

Enjoy your project in good health!

For years I have had a coax connector on the inside left of my electrical compartment. This is just besides where the power cord from the Onan plugs in.
That coax runs from behind the stove to the front where I have a slide switch that selects between the coax and the roof antenna. The output from the switch goes to a small antenna amplifier (newer antennas have this built in). This goes to a splitter which has one TV lead to the front of the motorhome and another lead back to the bedroom area in the rear.

I have never had any interference from any electrical equipment.

Having a mid-side power/water outside box of connectors, I just put a TV style F barrel connector in the wall. Having access to it inside and ran the cable to where I wanted it. Nice clean connection, and no electrical interference. I don't have a permanent outside antenna attached to the coach. I just use a batwing, mounted on temporary poles, for TV reception. I also use the same system for emergency amateur radio communications. Works during hurricanes, works at home.

Here's what I use--works just fine on digital. You can see it between the two side windows.http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=9492&cat=3820
