Re: fan belts - you don't suppose that it might be because there is a large
battery nearby that gets charged when the engine isn't running? The engine
battery is charged when there is air flowing through the engine compartment, but
the coach battery is being "worked" when there is no air flow. Dunno.

We've been ready to take a trial run after a year of working on it. Well, the
day came and it happened to be our anniversary. Talk about a high-risk
scenario.... The only thing left to do was figure how to get a clamp on one of
the outboard CV joints. First I went to a shop and he said "I'll just get a
rebuilt axle." No thanks. Then I tried one from Autozone. Lasted about 5
mights before it popped off. Time to take the drive, so I got out some .031
safety wire, my wife and I got under and got 4 wraps around it. Yup, she was
down there in the dirt and grease and slime along with me. Ran about 300 miles
and it's still on. I recently put in a electric fuel pump and as long as the
pump was on it ran flawlessly. And this is at elevations of 6,000 to 10,000 ft.
The only things that stopped working were the furnace(fuse), water
pump(pressure switch?) and holding tank(leaks at outlet). Aspens were at peak
color at Kenosha Pass. Awesome trip.

As for the fan belts, it seems that rubber bits in the engine compartment have a
short life.. Maybe shorter than they used to. The rubber caps I put over unused
vacuum ports seem to last about a year before they crack. Hoses, grommets, all
types seem to have very short shelf and use life.
