Inexpensive powder coating??
Boy, either powder coating has gotten a lot cheaper in the last few
years, or the folks around here have it confused with gold plate. I was
quoted $75 for a roughly 12 x 20 chunk of steel. I could have had it
painted at a local paint shop for less than that (as long as I wasn't
particular about the color). Coulda done it myself for about $10 cost
for paint & primer.

If that was 12 x 20 feet $75 was a pretty good price. If it was inches...that's pretty funny.
I had two parts done in the black wrinkle coat last month that were 5 feet by 1 foot by 1 foot and it cost $35.00 because I waited until that day in their production run.
Normally I'd do the paint but I needed the wrinkle coat to match all of the other stuff on my Jeep.
As far as environmental, powdercoat gets the win due to the VOC's in paint. Permits for paintbooths are tougher to get than powdercoat operations. However, powdercoat requires more overall energy due to the oven temps required. Either way the planet is taking a hit.
Yep, A PIA to touch up too. That's why I had to get my parts redone.
Don't even get me started on powdercoat over aluminum.
