I was working on The Murray this weekend in hope that we can goto Du Quoin just fixing up a few loose ends.
My steering was hairy when I got it in 2008, even with a number of steering parts that were replaced with Cinnibar parts for the required safety check. I had the steering box rebuilt and changed the new Cinnibar relay arm and idler arm to Dave Lenzi units (big improvement!)
I still have felt knocks and clunks of something loose in the steering. So I once again was looking for what was loose or worn.
What I found was 2 things:
1- The steering column shaft where it connects to the intermediate shaft has about 1/16" of play... I'm guessing there is a bearing in there. I couldn't find anything in the Manual or searching the GMC sites about it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
2- The intermediate shaft's constant velocity joint has some slight play, enough to equal maybe 3/8" at the steering wheel. I can feel the play if i turn the steering shaft back at forth by hand right at the VC joint. How much play should be in the CV joint?
I'm thinking these two things could be causing knocks and klunks that I feel in the steering wheel as the body moves separate from the frame with bumps etc.

Bruce,
There is a plastic bushing in a metal housing in the lower end of the steering column. I don't know the part number but I was able to get it from the Chevy dealer in Riverside, Ca. a year ago.
I think the column is a common gm part so your local dealer will have or can get the bushing/bearing.

The lower column bearing is a metal/nylon deal used in most GM cars of the era. Dirt tends to collect in there and foul the grease. There is a wire retainer that holds the bearing in. If you pull the intermediate shaft you can then slide the bearing off and wash it out and repack it. Be sure to scribe mark everything as the explanation of how it all keys back is pretty envolved and I can't rattle it off without looking at one first. You can then also clean and repack the coupler and grease the 2 fittings on the shaft and be sure it is sliding on the blue part. Valvoline Synpower seems to be the most prefered grease for preventing bind in the coupler and in my opinion doesn't have the phase separation that Mobile 1 tends to get. Be safe as this mallady could cause lose of control if you are in a sticky situation and need to make steering corrections.

John,
I an exploded view, I see an adaptor bushing shown on a pickup truck column, but not on a van column. Do you know if there is this adaptor on our column?
The adaptor shows as 7805822
