Lots of heave iron around lately, it the final drive out of the 68 Eldo a better ratio than what my GMC has stock?

Not sure I want to pull it if it's just the same ratio as the dipstick is missing from the trans

The final drive is separate from the trans. A missing trans dip stick won't affect the final drive. Also, the transmission could still be a good case core even if most of the insides got wet. Manny would know for sure.

Sounds like you would be a popular guy if you at least pull the governor out of the trans!

me just a hair over $10 including tax at local
Advanced Autoparts store!

Governor and modulator are not the same thing. Governor is in short supply.

Web search says final drive 3.08, probably exactly the same as your GMC.

If you pull it I will buy the governor from you. I need a spare after what happened to my new Manny Tranny. I know a guy that I can pay to repair a broken one.

G'day,

Count the bolts that hold the steel cover on the final drive; if it has 10
bolts it's a 3.08(7) if it has 8 bolts it's a 3.21.

Note that the 3.21 has planetary gears in it and it has been noted here as
being "bulletproof!"

Regards,
Rob M.

Ok, I won't be able to get up there until the weekend, but if it's still there I'll at least pull the Gov.
Not sure if I really want to store a whole transmission or not.

Now if there are 10 bolts, thanks Rob!, then I will pull the gov and the final drive.

Here's a little primer for you about how to identify the 3.21
