I believe that I just changed the original air filter on the onan and also just took out the original oil filter (and possibly oil). The filter I have is a WIX 51374 and it appears to be about half the length of the one that came out. What is a good number for a long filter so it is not recessed into the sheet metal? I have the 6K Onan.

51762 on the WIX for the Onan, 51258 is for the Olds in Wix. There is an K and N from I think a Kawasaki that is a fit for the Onan air to replace the whole thing, but you will have to search for that number.

Wayne,
I guess this is the time frame per the maintenance manual for changing the
original Onan air filter. I changed mine out last month. After a lot of
searching, I found a John Deere air filter at Home Depot. It is almost an
exact fit. It probably would have been an exact fit if mine wasn't so old
and distorted. If I remember correctly the John Deere filter replaces
Briggs & Stratton 16-22 HP or something like that. It also has a foam
pre-filter on it. I checked the web and HD was the cheapest around as most
mail order vendors charged extra for the pre-filter and shipping. I think I
paid $15.
Hope this helps.

I used a K&N filter IIRC its HP 2005 it has the bypass but unfortunately its the same length as the original filter which means with K&Ns filter nut the onan drawer won't close unldss you grind it off. That takes about 10 seconds with an angle grinder. Its too bad I like the nut on the end of their filters it makes it real easy to get on and off...

I installed a NAPA 1516 Gold filter on my 6K onan and it fit and the unit slides in BUT it rubs the top of the filter. The filter I took out was a NAPA Gold 1374 and like you mentioned it is recessed so it is not easy to remove. Following this thread it seems that the WIX 51762 would be a NAPA 1762 Gold. The MGL 51516 must have been the number that got me the 1516 at NAPA.
Any way you figure the long filter number that I have is NAPA 1516 Gold. The short number that I have is NAPA 1374 Gold.
Just remember that the 1516 rubs as the tray slides in.

For those of you experimenting with different size oil filters…especially smaller or recessed ones - please keep in mind that our air-cooled Onans have a pull-through cooling system (trade name “Onan Vacuflo”) as contrasted with more traditional push-through cooling systems. All of the openings between the generator and the engine as well as the oil filter opening must have sealing shims or grommets which eliminate suction leakage at those locations. The oil filter grommet is particularly critical to sealing its opening since that is the location closest to the vacuum source - the flywheel - and any leakage at that point will seriously compromise cooling effectiveness for the entire remainder of the engine and generator.
