I’m noodling with some ideas around lithium batteries, inverters, and replacing the Onan.
If a large battery bank were configured at higher voltage, say 48 volts, the wire size could be significantly smaller and the inverted efficiency might be better. The generator cabinet is plenty big enough for a load of batteries, but charging them would take a much larger alternator, and if the voltage is higher, well, a separate alt might be in order.
Having a second large alternator run from the engine would give significant charge while underway. Did Oldsmobile have brackets for auxiliary generators or even a smog pump? What are modern RV’s doing to charge their batteries?
This is likely just a conversation starter.
