We used R = Radio (Set to Unicom or tower as appropriate) and P for Pilot = am I ready to go.

And assuming you aviated properly and were preparing to descend, GUMPP.

(Gas, Undercarriage, Mixture, Pumps, Props)

Edit: Lemme point out, neither of these take the place of the aircraft checklist... use them in addition to it.
