We have a small black fly about 1/2 the size of a standard house fly. They
hatch in late spring/early summer in snow melt. They flock in clouds, and
their bite hurts like mad. They leave no welts or bite marks. Slow buggers,
easy to kill, but every one you kill, 200 of them come to avenge the death.
DEET has no effect on them. We call them biting flies.
