Guessing it was maybe for an aux gas can (Boat can) to bypass the mechanical pump. Perhaps the tanks were full of crap and in lieu of dropping the tanks they brazed in the fitting...

Or that was the way someone ran an electric fuel pump to the carb.

Either way, I would replace that line with a braided heat shield line from one of the Jims.
