Just had some friends over today, they knew about my 1977 Kingsley and they relayed a story about an Oklahoma friend of theirs who's orange GMC was wrecked in Malibu. I immediately guessed it was the one in the youtube video posted already (7:36 mark) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ff_c48D2CoA.
They said no serious injuries, but of course the owner was heartbroken. She had the coach in Los Angeles but she was not there, apparently a parent & child (friends of the owner) had borrowed it. Seems likely the brakes overheated on the way down Malibu Canyon Road near Pepperdine. Probably only a descent of 500' or so to sea level but who knows how hot the brakes were at the start of the grade. Like I read one time, "Brakes are remarkable. Takes about 90% of a vehicle to make it roll, but just a few brake parts to bring it to a stop" But we all know you can't fight physics. Well, you can't win, at least.
