O.K. Time to chime in here. Cove Palisades, near Madras, is nearly dead
bang in the center of totality. The campground can best be described as
marginal. Uneven campsites are the rule rather than the exception. I have
camped there three or four times over the years. It can be hot, dry, and
dusty there. Group camp is sparse. I have also camped at Farwell bend.
Hotter there. A bit more trees. A bit out of the Eclipse path, but should
work. About as far away as you can be and still claim to be in Oregon. If
you travel via I 84, roads are good. If you go through Bend, Brothers,
Burns, etc, it is all 2 lane, remote, and likely to be jammed with traffic
because of the eclipse. There are many, many U.S. forest service uninproved
campgrounds along the path of totality. First come first served. Check
those out too.

Cove Palisades looks better to us too. It has somewhat less chance of rain
(0" vs ~1" in August).
Some of it is higher up (better views). I think it's a prettier area too,
but I'm partial to desert canyons.
Shorter drive, cooler weather. It's closer to Madras and the Oregon
Solarfest if that's of interest to anyone.
If you really want that extra 12 seconds, drive slightly north. I think at
Farwell Bend
you'd probably want to drive up out of the campground to get the bigger
views. Six of one...

I plan to try for the upper campground first. If that doesn't work, I'll
try for whatever I can get in the lower ones.
After that, I'll try Farwell Bend. Guess we'll see if the reservation
website can handle the traffic...

I consider the group camp idea a backup plan if we can't get any/enough
sites via the direct approach.

Just my .02.
