Karen,

At the 49ers rally, there were 5 definite coaches that want to be in the
path of totality. Like you, we feel that if you are going , go for best.
On that note, most favored central to eastern Oregon. We all realized that
closer to I5 would be easier and might get more coaches, but feel further
east will give better skies. Farewell Bend was number one choice, despite
being almost Idaho. Other thought was camping in La Pine and taking
toads, etc North for the eclipse. Dry camping option was still on board and
somewhere around Mitchell would be great if we wanted to go that way.
No one wanted to make final decision, but would like.e me to direct email
them with where and when to try for registration.
So, if you want to xhoose, think everyone will follow your lead.

Well, I was planning to try for Cove Palisades for a couple of reasons: it's typically about 10 degrees cooler in August,
and there's a campground at the top that should give us good wide landscape views. It's also a significantly easier drive.
I could be convinced otherwise, and if we can't get in at Cove Palisades, we'll try for Farewell Bend. Having never been to
either campground, it's hard to know which is better. (Of course, the more we broadcast the idea, the harder it'll be for us to get sites...)

Be aware that there are two Oregon campgrounds called Farewell Bend: the state recreation area, and another one in a forest.
This makes it kinda confusing when you're searching online for pictures. The state recreation area is the one we're talking about.
Although it has nice trees in the Day Use area, the campsites are a lot more sparse, similar to (or maybe less shady than) Cove Palisades.
It's also down on the river bank, which means it's in a bit of a valley, limiting views.

I do still believe the group reservation could be worth a shot. It looks so far like the two first-come-first-served
campgrounds I mentioned will NOT be on the reservation system by the 17th, but could be reserved by calling and making a group
reservation on/after 8am on the 17th, thus (probably) avoiding the rush. We're planning for four campsites, and with five 49ers added,
we'd only need eleven more to get to twenty (the minimum group reservation size).

Worst case, we'll find someplace to dry camp. There's a lot more of that available than hookup sites, but given the
time of year, AC would sure be nice (preferably without generators).
