Hi Karen,
I'm not sure you need be concerned about bing right under the path of the total eclipse. Even as far away as we are down here on the border with Ca and not far from the ocean it is forecast to be 90-95% so you may be able to broaden your search area.

Jerry

yikes, I think we're already pushing it in terms of time. I just checked a couple of private parks near Redmond/Madras
(Lake Simtustus RV Park, and Redmond/Central OR KOA) and both are already fully booked for the eclipse. Sad

Worst case, we could find some BLM land...

Karen

Karen and Jerry,

I am going to jump in here because:
A - I have missed being in the totality four times.
B - I am a celestial navigator and very much accustom to using the the sun as a tool.

Even if you are in the path of totality out in the west, that totality will only be a little over 2 minutes.
But, it should not be missed (if that can possibly be avoided).

The entire event from the first visible bite until the will last is several hours.
The light starts to get strange at a 50%. It is different than dusk or dawn because there is no sky reflection.
Things get really strange at about 90~95%. I have been there. It does not nearly go completely dark.
So, if you get within striking range of totality such that you can get in the path before it happens, a prime bivouac is not necessary.

Because I have missed the prime eclipse totality twice because of weather, our plan is to go to some easy bivouac that has good access east and study the weather for at least a day and then move along the path to a place with a very good chance of being clear.
We will also be carrying a cardboard box "sun scope". (Basically a pin-hole camera without film.)
