My kids were little for the last total eclipse in Oregon, but we loaded up
the 68 VW Kombi with camping gear and headed for Hermiston where my wife's
aunt and uncle lived. Their house set up on a slight plateau and commanded
an unobstructed view both to the west and east for many miles. We could see
the shadow approaching for 10 miles and receding for about the same. Had
all the trick glasses of the day, but the best view of the sun was inside
of a cardboard box that a refrigerator came in. I cut a 4" square opening
in one side and taped a piece of mylar foil over it. Then I punctured the
foil with a darning needle so that it would project an image inside the
box. I taped a piece of white paper to the inside of the box. Kids got in
the box, along with me. Wayyy cool. There were more weird people in Eastern
Oregon for that event than I have seen anywhere except Walmart. Druids,
hippies, witches and warlocks, stoners, you name it, they were there. I am
sure that the upcoming one will draw a similar crowd. Catch it if you can.
