Another thought along the use of spacers. Would the spacers add enough clearance for the modern cone shaped GMC/Chevy truck 16" rims to fit over the front hubs? Not that I'm going to chase this option, but an interesting thought. Especially at 2 a.m.

They might, especially if one is not concerned about hub centerings. My 16" steel wheels are bell shaped and have the same bore as the original 16.5" wheels.
