Jared,
I had a 2 day backache after fetching the coach from Danville with the original factory seats, just like you did. After that, it hurt just to drive it to work 10 minutes away. The non-adjustable back angle was the real problem for me as I had to hold myself forward and the seat cushion had very little give to it...horrible seats, guess that's why they lasted so long. The upholstery is still in great condition!
I solved the problem with seats from a Bronco II or an Explorer. Took the adjuster tracks off of them and bolted the front right to the rotary plates in the GMC. The thinner yet more pliable cushion brought me a little closer to the floor and the seatback angle could be adjusted to my comfort.
I think the front holes in the rotary plate lined up with the threaded holes in the seat almost perfectly, and I just had to add some short flat steel extensions (discarded bed frame rails) to the plate to reach the rear holes in the seat because the Bronco seats were longer than the originals. I used the highback seats, not the low ones from the early Bronco IIs. The Explorer seats are all highback, I believe. Then I just added some seatcovers from Pep Boys to match the interior of the GMC.
What a difference...could drive all day now, or at least until something breaks Laughing
