Jack,
Sounds like you might best involve someone with "wrench" experience to look
over your shoulder and guide you through the process. That being said let
me suggest the following procedure:

1.) DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.
2.) Remove the engine hatch cover and lay a piece of plywood or a couple of
boards across the opening so you can lie across the opening (I call this a
"belly board").
3.) Lie down with your head over the front of the engine, you'll see the
three belts immediately behind the fan,
4.) Notice that all three run from a common pulley at the bottom of the
engine (the crank shaft pulley) then each one goes either to a pulley on the
air conditioning compressor on your right, the alternator on your left, or
the power steering pump also on the left but somewhat below the alternator.
Notice the routing each takes around the water pump (fan) pulley.
5.) Each of these three devices is designed to pivot around its primary
mounting bolts to enable the belts to be loosened or tightened. Once
tightened by pivoting the device an additional bolt sliding in a slotted
bracket holds it in position. Your first job is to loosen the several bolts
holding each one. Don't remove any of them, just loosen them enough so the
device can be twisted to loosen and remove the belts.
6.) Here's the fun part. Several of the bolts are hard to find, harder to
get to. It helps if you have an extra elbow. The AC compressor has pivot
bolts on the front and back between it and the engine, the sliding tension
bolt is below the front of the unit. The alternator is much the same. The
power steering pump has a sneaky bolt between its mounting bracket and the
engine. Chances are its hidden in goo and will not be immediately obvious,
another bolt is between the bracket and the pulley.
7.) Once each unit is loose, twist it to loosen the belt (sometimes just
pulling up on the belt will rotate the unit and loosen the belt). Take the
forward belt, the AC belt, off the AC pulley and work it over the fan blades
to remove it from the engine. Do the second and third in the same way.
8.) Install the three new belts in reverse order starting with the rearmost
and ending with the AC. Remember to go around the fan pulley.
9.) Now you have to tension the three. You can do this using a crowbar or a
very large screwdriver to lever the alternator, power steering pump, and AC
compressor away from the crank shaft pulley till its belt is tight, then
tightening the "sliding" bolt first to hold the belt in tension. Follow
this by tightening the pivot bolts. Do this with all three devices. Be
sure not to pry against anything fragile. Rule of thumb says you shouldn't
be able to pull any belt up more that 1/2" after it's tensioned.
10.) Remove anything and everything from atop the engine, reconnect the
battery and start it up. Turn the steering wheel left and right. Any
squealing and the PS belt isn't tight enough. Turn on the AC. Again,
squealing says the belt isn't tight enough. Turn on headlights, ditto the
alternator belt.
11.) Retire to the house and have yourself a good strong belt for a messy
job well done.

Hope this helps, Glenn Giere
