Folks

This is a continuation of my request as to how to replace the belts on my 76 Eleganze ll with a 455 engine.

Loosen 3 bolts for each belt IIRC. After replacing belts, I would tighten the AC first then the PS then the Alt. when tightening the belts use a pry bar to put tension on the belt while you tighten a sloted bolt to hold, the ps tank bends easy, be careful there, then tighten the other 2 bolts. Good Luck....

I get all three belts back in position. The power steering belt (middle), is the one I tighten first. At any rate, you must do the middle belt before the alternator. It is the tough one for me. I work on this one from underneath. Rather than prying on the power steering tank, I pry on the pulley itself. I found I could put a bar between the crank shaft pulley and the power steering pulley and get good leverage.

The tricky part is tightening the bolt while holding the belt tight. There is a hole in the power steering pulley that allows you to get to on of the bolt, but only when the pulley is in the perfect position. I found if I get a socket on that bolt and then pull the belt tight. You really need about 4 hands at this point, but I usually only have the socket come off, about three times. YOu will want that bolt very slightly snugged so the ratchet will work with one hand.
