Help Joe Pick a Paint Job[ 41 votes ]
1. Scheme 1 18 / 44%
2. Scheme 2 14 / 34%
3. Scheme 3 9 / 22%

The Birch is looking a little crusty, so I have been pondering new paint. So After watching RV the other night I took a template (Songer's?) and started playing around with pixlr.

The GMC will be a tailgating vehicle for S Carolina Football games, so I wanted to get some School color in.

Hlelp me pick one.

I meant to ask Joe, Since you are thinking of paint, does that mean you got your engine back in and running?

I do not understand it. Two people posted that the liked item #1 but no has voted for it yet in the poll. What gives?

It is kind of like going to the polls and not voting.

No, but if is going to be a paperweight in the drive, it might as well look good! Laughing Laughing

Engine picked up from the machine shop today. Guaranteed to have 900 HP and get 40 MPG...

Want to put in in Sunday, we will see.

Darn Joe, Only 900 HP and 40 mpg? Is that some shade tree mechanic doing the rebuild?

Mary Anne likes the white top too for the same reasons. I don't want too much contrast. I like #3, but it reminds me of the gadabout and I am more of a Pepsi man...

I am good with lines, but not with color, so while the pattern was easy, the colors were not. It has to have some garnet in it, and the front swoop seemed to be the best place for it. Say what you will about the "racoon" look, the dark color around the windshield downplays the height difference in the front and side windows, which I always thought interrupted the lines. I think the GMC designers thought so too as evidenced by the factory stripe packages where the top stripe stopped at the first window.

Joe - I like #2 and have voted accordingly. Have you picked a paint shop? I really hate that Topeka has quit painting GMC's. Please report back any success in finding a reasonably priced and decent quality painter. Thanks and good luck

Stick,

Those that have met me know I have one slice of bacon short of a sandwich, so I have sort of a reputation to uphold.

There is no shop that meets my standards with regards to surface finish...in my price range (sub 5 figures for a car). I have always been a pain in the ass about paint quality, and it is a curse. Paint is one of those things that once its applied is not easy to get someone to do over, and there is a material cost. I have had at least a dozen cars painted professionally and have never gotten the attention to detail no matter the price. I'd rather do it myself.

Have you ever heard of the $50 paint Job? Been discussed at length on the Moparts Forum and has spawned quite a few dedicated sites. Basically, you lay down thin coats with a no-nap high density roller and the paint self-levels. It takes a few coats but, unlike spraying, you can do a panel at a time. The key is the same with all paint jobs - prepping the surface.

I will probably hire out the bulk of the prep work. Now, what gives me pause is the sheer size of the vehicle and the labor intensity of the process. Still pondering the logistics. May just need to find a barn and a wagner power sprayer...it would still look better than it does now. I think the last coat was latex. Laughing
