Hi All,

Well here is a trip report from our little run south from Bainbridge Island,
WA down south to southern Utah. Got out on March 1st and have made stops at
Antelope Is. north of Salt Lake and then Snow Canyon in St. George, UT and
then on to Zion. The GMC is going great and the 454 is doing great. The
new four bag system is the best and what a change that has made. Right now
we are at lake Powell and will head for Monument Valley and Moab for some
rides on the Ural sidecar. It is great to be on the road in the GMC.

I took my coach to a Tin Can Tourist Outing in Milford, Mich. this past spring. There were three other GMC's and we had a good turn out during the open tour of the campers. I found the 'Tourists to be friendly and a fun bunch. The function was well organized and nicely run. Even the Airstream folks showed genuine interest in our coaches. I overheard a woman lament to her husband during the open camper tour, "we should never have sold our GMC, I sure do miss the way it rode". My chest puffed out a little further. I am signed up for the Fall outing in September.

Dan,
The TCT Rally is held at the Dearborn City, Mich, Park which is in Milford, Michigan. It is about 30 or so miles due west of Detroit, adjacent to the GMC Milford Proving Grounds. It is a very nice facility. Google: Tin Can Tourist and look up the Fall Campout at Milford. I think there are still some sites left. Do come, you will like it. I am at site 158. Richard Waters hooked me up with this rally and I think he will be there as well, along with a few other Great Lakers.  I am cooking Friday and will buy you and your wife a glass (or two) of wine from my cellar along with dinner. The TCT'ers are a diverse group.

First, Let me say Happy New Year to all our GMC netters. This has been a good year for me and I hope this coming year will be just as good for all of you.
Next, let me thank Mr. and Mrs. Ken Henderson for their fine southern hospitality during my visit to their home in Americus. Ken, you have a great set up for working not only on your GMC, but all kinds of projects. When I die and go to heaven, I will be in Kens shop. If I go to hell, I will be in my garage.
After leaving Americus, I traveled a leisurely pace to my friends place in Zephyrhills, Florida.
The temperature was in the mid seventies today and I am enjoying it. I will not rub it in any more. Like hell.

The fuel lines hold a lot of air & it'll have to pass thru before it will pick
up.You may need to put gas in the carb vent to fill the carb several times
before it catches. This is a "Been there, Done that" for me...

Johnny,

I suspect you've never seen this document:

http://www.bdub.net/GMCServiceComments.pdf

It was created to help GMCer's that run into problems on the road find repair shops like RD's.

If someone finds a new shop that is good they send the details of their experience to Bdub and he updates the document.

I didn't want to do that in your name as it's not right to submit stuff in other people's names. However, since you have pointed me
towards Google I will send Bdub the following:

RD's Service Center
824 Bessemer City Road
Gastonia, NC 28052-1317
Tel: (704) 864-1318
Owner: Steve
Comments: Started by RD and Steve - hence the name - when they retired to have something to do.  Steve bought RD's share later but
kept the name.  All the help is older guys, mostly retired, who sort of drop in when there's work.  And they FIX things.  And loved
the idea of the GMC - carburetor, no computer, you can repair it. Very highly recommended, they do good work for a more than fair
price and to a person, they're nice guys. Replaced a failed water pump and repaired the banged up pulley for $565.
Submitted by: Johnny Bridges (August 2012)

I trust this will not offend you.

That's sort of like the top two things that contribute to geting more
people stuck than any other.

A DEFINITION:

Four-wheel-drive (4WD): A system of vehicular propulsion
which enables you to get twice as far into the woods or a
swamp before becoming hopelessly stuck and thereby needing
a farmer's tractor (and the farmer) to get you out of your
predicament!

RonC

Ron,

While I largely agree with what you are saying, the fact is that those two can be keys to getting unstuck unless you used them to get where you do get really stuck. That is largely a matter of common (as rare as it is) sense.

At one time, I had to travel on roads so problematic that most would have considered it off-roading. I had a - actually several - mentors. I was young and indestructible, but fortunately I listened.

First thing is the minimum kit for such is:
A Day's worth of Water
An Ax
A Shovel
A Long Lead (chain or very heavy line (rope)) 50~100ft
A Winch or Chainfall
An Extra Spare tire (Assuming the vehicle already is carrying one) is also a real good idea.

Don't leave the hard road (there was no local pavement) without knowing how much fuel you have on board.

Make sure someone (that might care) knows where you plan to go.

And the Real Big One....
Never GO FORWARD in 4 Wheel drive. Only use that to back out so you can find another way.
Because, when you get stuck in 4 Wheel Drive - - You Am STUCK bunky.

Why the kit above?
Because ... When you blow through the surface of the swamp that looked like a meadow, you run out the long lead that still won't reach a stout tree, so you get the ax and cut one down. Now you get the shovel and dig a T shaped trench square to the way you want to pull and just in the reach of the chainfall and long lead. So you can tie to the middle of the dead man (what they call a timber used a an anchor) and hopefully haul the thing back to solid ground. That is why you brought the water.

(Do I need to say BTDT?)

When we were teens, one of the mob had a 'Jeep' - original CJ - which we used to take down in the bottomland at times.  It had a pto winch, and he always carried a house trailer anchor and a piece of rebar to turn it with.  When you got really bogged in the gumbo, you'd pull the winch cable all the way out, set the anchor, and reel the Jeep up to it.  Sometimes two or three lengths to get to solid ground.

Matt

Take your GMC out of gear at the top of the west end of that road (engine running for power steering) and you might get to 100 MPH by the time you reached the bottom, IF you could keep it on the curving road!
