Ray explains the purpose of the front wheel spacer on dual wheel one-ton truck/vans. It starts about the 6:00 minute mark in this video where he is working on the front brakes of a one-ton dually Ram pickup. The GMC motorhome uses dually wheels hence the one-ton front end needs the spacer to place the wheel correctly to the hub.

If the stock GMCMH knuckles and hubs were designed for non-dually wheels as the pickup truck's were, the GMCMH would require spacers.
Alas, the GMCMH hubs were designed for the dually wheels and therefore spacers push the wheels out too far and cause a large increase to the scrub radius, which is bad.

Rick,
I should have been clearer. I was referring to the one-ton front end upgrade that uses the knuckles from the one ton truck. These knuckles were designed for single wheels. When used on a dually pickup, the spacers are required to compensate for the additional offset of the dually wheels and place the tire track in the same position as the single wheel.
