Ken,
Is Eugene (the owner of GMCNet forum) Mr ERF (Gene Fisher) or are they different people?

Gene Fisher's GMC Motorhome Info site disappeared quite a while ago and Billy Massey (bdub) saved the info to his site where it lives on (Thanks Billy!)

FYI I just sent a message to the Forum Contact (Eugene) about the possible disconnection between the Forum and the email server. Hopefully he can look into this and resolve it.

In a nutshell, Patrick's site is an email reflector. You subscribe to it and everything that it receives is sent back out as an email, individually or batched, to you and all other, approved / subscribed users. One email is repeated 50 or 100 times out. There is a little more than that to it, but that is how it works. Patrick put this one he called GMCnet on line and at the time is was a great service to GMCers.

Eugene, also a GMCer, liked the service (GMC data available) but it had many technical short comings. #1 was the flood of emails that could / would hit your inbox every day whether you wanted them or not. So Eugene put up a second web based server for his use. The differences were that it did not send out all of those emails. You as a user signed on to the server and requested to see only the things you wanted after looking at a list of topics. His service could be run on any computer with a web browser.

It basically took the emails that were sent out by Patrick;s server and put them on a his data base server.server. His server running a product named FUDFOrUM and could do much more. It's basic improvements were that there was only one copy of the data kept on his server. So everyone saw exactly the same thing. It also could be searched any time and even years later. Also you could correct or delete posting and every one saw the changes / correction when they looked at the posting after than. an also did not flood peoples inbox.

The Fud Forum was designed as a stand alone forum server with lots of features, many of which he had to shut off to maintain compatibility with the GMCnet email server. As FUD Forum is really a stand alone Forum server, when the email server went down for an extended amount of time the FUD forum just kept on working for us only without the input of the email users. That is where we were as of yesterday. Today it looks like someone is working on fixing the down link between the two.

The difference is the FUD Forum only sends out postings on request, meaning you sign on to get them. Only one copy is kept at the server. This way everyone sees exactly the same thing no matter what method or browser they use. .

I monitor both this forum and the "New" one and both have good info. But the depth of knowledge here and the respect shown to contributing members make this my go-to if I'm in trouble. Ken, thanks for the history. It seems like with Gene and Patrick no longer owners then we're a little like Wiley Coyote having run a few steps beyond the edge of the cliff. I hope not, because losing this forum would definitely be a blow to the community, especially as parts get scarcer and knowledgeable owners pass or move on. I hope you all know how much I value you.

Ken Burton, thanks for the post.

Billy Massey and I are trying to resurrect the e-mail connection between e-mail list and this web-based mirror. It looks like some of the underlying system components have been "upgraded" and that has broken e-mail delivery from the web-forum to the e-mail list.

Just a little more history, I set up this website to act as a mirror of the e-mail list in January of 2004, the e-mail list started a few years before that. 19 years is a pretty good run.

Though with the Facebook groups and the other more user-friendly web-based GMC discussion groups, the end is drawing near.

It is nice to hear from you Eugene. You have provided a great service to all of us over the years. Most forum users do not realize it was you behind the forum and what you have done for us. You kept too low of a profile. You are the one that gave us a much more user friendly site to use. If I had to put up with the flood of emails, I would have been gone from GMCnet long ago.

A Big thanks to you from me and many others here.

In my previous life I designed and implemented systems, networks, and solutions on very large computers for large companies and government entities world wide. There is a big difference between what I did (designing and project managing) and the actual hands on implemention that others did as part of the team solution to make things work. I respect what you are doing to for us make it work.

Thank you again.

Ken B.

This forum has been, and always will be, my go-to source. Might not post much, usually because I might be in a jam. Thanks to the admins.
