Have to admit it's been forever since I dealt with drum brakes/shoes/wheel cylinders as I've been driving cars with 4 wheel discs for a long time.

Well having a GMC, drum brakes are part of the game so time for a refresher course is now. I'll be pulling the wheels and drums off next week to have a look at what's what. I'm expecting to change the shoes and while I'm in there I figure I may as well change the wheel cylinders too.

Probably change the fluid as well and luckily my pal has loaned me his Jim Hupy pressure bleeder kit so I should be good.

One thing that concerns me is that I see some chatter online about "brake seals".

What are these and where do they fit in the scheme of things? Are they just the rubber seals on the ends of the brake cylinders or some other vital part I need?

Larry, it should be the circular metal ring with a rubber lip/seal on the inside of the ring. You press it into the frame side of the hub. When you reinstall the hub/brakes the seal goes around the spindle to keep water out of the bearings, and to keep the grease in the hub. Dave Lenzi has a tool to press the seal in place. you don’t want the seal to be pressed in completely flush with the end of the hub.

There are threads regarding bearings that deal with this and have pictures.
One is mine on the forum, regarding replacing rear bearings and discussion of the seal.

I left mine pround of the surface by 0.045"

Just replaced my rear brake seals and inserted them flush with the hub surface. Called Cinnabar where they were purchased and they said they supply OEM seals that can be inserted flush and my installation should be good. It is only aftermarket seals that have to be left slightly higher than the hub surface if they were not manufactured to OEM specs.

Oh I get it now. They aren't actually BRAKE seals, but hub bearing seals. OKAY!

Exactly, just a regular hub seal. I put one of mine together today.

I'm having problems with sealing the other end, which is a steel bearing cap. I bought a set of Dorman caps and they are way too tight, I ruined two trying to get them in before I gave up. They should be common 2.5" caps, but these Dormans are made wrong or something. Will go shopping next time I'm in town.

Burl,

I had the same issue last year. The Dorman's seem to be made with a steep taper so they won't stay in place. I think I found a couple at Princess Auto that worked... but had to rummage through the bin to find acceptable ones.

Seems to me I wrote down a part number that was suppose to be a good fit, but I can't find it at the moment.
