I want to put a small fan in our GMC bedroom and control speed with a rheostat of some kind. I've looked at several but cannot tell what I need for this particular fan. the fan is a typical "Car Fan" that many have used in the cockpit to circulate air. The fan is a 12v 15CF 6" fan that is a 1.2A fan. Can anyone help me on what I might use. I looked at this one but do not have the knowledge to determine which of the proper resistance I could use.

You do not want a rheostat. That is very old inefficient technology. A Pulse Width Modulator is the current best practice. (Google "pulse width modulator" on wiki for technical and operational information.)

EBay "12V pulse width modulator" to find appropriate devices. For your use most any one will work. There are two basic types you will be interested in. One has the potentiometer mounted on the circuit board, the other has the potentiometer on wire leads so the control can be mounted remotely to the device. Which one you want will be determined on the mounting method.

On eBay you can also search for "12v pwm controller". That should provide the same results.

The "rheostat" listed will not handle the current needed. I haven't done the math but I believe none of those listed would be the correct ohm value.

Please ask more questions if needed. I have 5+ of these installed on mine for various purposes.

Yes that device will easily operate your fan. The only consideration is the mounting. Some of these are not suitable for a thicker panel.

You might also consider a single fixed resistor to get a lower fixed speed.
