Onan had a severe oil leak. Replaced the front seal on crankshaft. Had gobs of oil and dirt on front and sides of Onan. Used a degreaser to clean up as best I could but kept degreaser away from the electronic board. I did spray the solenoid connections on the starter which was covered with dirty oil.
Started the Onan up but the starter would not shut down. Any thoughts on why starter won't disengage when Onan is running?

Depends on whether it's being kept engaged mechanically or electrically. Since you note oil n crud everywhere, I'd pull the starter off, carefully disassemble, and clean and (lightly) regrease the bendix. While it's off, use your trusty meter to see if the solenoid relay is stuck closed. Report back.

Good advice. That's exactly what I did when mine got stuck on. Disassembled and cleaned the bendix solenoid assembly. Worked properly after that.

Removed sheet metal, flywheel and cycled starter drive. Gear cycled in and out with out and any hesitation. Had a bad wear pattern on starter gear so I replaced the starter with a spare I had. Primed carb and fired Onan up. Shut Onan off and tried to restart but had a drag on flywheel and starter would only rotate flywheel a halve revolution before stopping. Checked house battery and got 13.7 volts (plugged into house circuit). I will remove starter and check brushes and clean up the guts and lub bendix drive.

When I had the front sheet metal that covers the outside of flywheel off, I rotated flywheel and heard a rubbing noise. Removed flywheel and saw a spot that had the painting worn off. Bent area in, installed flywheel ,and the rubbing noise went away. Installed guarding and front cover. Cycled starter and all was good. Onan fired up after a couple of seconds.
