I was given a set of Thorley headers for a 455 engine. One header has a crack in it 5 inches long. Can this be welded up satisfactory?

Anything can be fixes. If you can weld go for it. If not see what a welder costs.

1977 Kingsley 455 as stock as it gets except lots of Ragusa parts

Bruce,

You did not say where the crack is and if this is a set of ceramic coated parts.

It can probably be welded, but care will have to be taken to not introduce stress that will make it crack again. We have some regular tricks about this, but I want to here what you are up against first.

Seems to me that about 10years ago there was conversation about the Thorley headers quality going down hill. I think that the header that was recommended were “Doug’s headers”. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Scott,
I'm confused. (normal)
I got Thorley headers in 1996 and what I bought were "Doug Thorley" headers. Torqued them once and forgot about them.
So what's with "Doug's" headers?

I’m trying to do this from memory, so don’t beat up the messenger!! I believe Doug and his wife got a divorce, and the company was sold. The new owners labeled the headers “Doug Thorley Headers”. Then after that Doug Thorley started making headers specifically for motorhomes, GMC’s included. Those headers are labeled “Doug’s”. I don’t remember if the complaints on the “Doug Thorley Headers” were with quality or fit. But didn’t this thread start with a split pipe? Personally I like “Doug’s” the most.
Scott.

My coach ('78, 403ci) got a set of Doug Thorley headers in 1997, and FWIW they're still perfect. I did have to install a new gasket, but that's not because of anything wrong with the header.

I know many people who are running “Doug Thorley Headers” and they all love them with no complaints. Anyone remember Hooker and/or Headman headers with Thrush mufflers! Or was that more of a west coast thing?

Thrush were in the Midwest too. A cheap “throw it on for now” option. Great logo though.

I remember installing hooker headers and side pipes on my 71 corvette. It was East coast as will.

If I'm not mistaken, I bought a "Hookers Headers" expansion chamber exhaust for my 250 Yamaha which I (amature) motocrossed with. "New American Torture" was the comment from anyone on the track behind me. 250CC... 450CI-- they're all racers (ahem) more or less.

All good memories! Yes, I do believe that hooker made a header for the dirt bikes also. I wanted a green and silver Honda Elsinore in the worst way for dessert riding when I was a kid. I think Steve McQueen rode one.
