I’m noodling with some ideas around lithium batteries, inverters, and replacing the Onan.

If a large battery bank were configured at higher voltage, say 48 volts, the wire size could be significantly smaller and the inverted efficiency might be better. The generator cabinet is plenty big enough for a load of batteries, but charging them would take a much larger alternator, and if the voltage is higher, well, a separate alt might be in order.

Having a second large alternator run from the engine would give significant charge while underway. Did Oldsmobile have brackets for auxiliary generators or even a smog pump? What are modern RV’s doing to charge their batteries?

This is likely just a conversation starter.

Larry,
The FEAD for a coach motor is very different than any of the passcar version so no smog pump was ever required.
But, there is at least one coach out there that is running a York air compressor. I have never seen it, but it sure was not a factory option.
Something to keep in mind would be that a single belt is good for about 1.5Hp. This is why a 100 amp (at 14V) alternator will smoke a single belt.
I don't have a good solution to get you to the belt Hp you are thinking about.

I think in another thread someone was pondering switching their overhead A/C to one of the new Coleman DC units, eliminating the dash air, and using the AC bracket to host another alternator to power it down the road..

I guess if you are matching your Coaches A/C to the higher voltage bank that spot would open up.

I hadn’t thought about the belt. I’m a fan of the double pulley on the stock alternator and that’s less than 100 amp (?).

I worry about the alternator being overtaxed by lithium batteries even with a BIM in-line and charging 12 volt cells.

How about a serpentine belt and a 48V alternator in place on the 12v one dc to dc converter for 12V?
