| Norcold fridge gets warm inside- is there any hope ? [message #368490] |

I got this Norcold fridge as part of a GMC part out so i attempted to test it.
I plugged it in to AC and connected 12V to the panel. Nothing, no lights came on, it was dead.
So, i hot wired 120VAC direct to the AC heating element, the coils began to get warm but after a couple hours the inside of the bax was also getting warm.
I'm assuming it's toast but is there anything else i can try or check ?

Those things aren't known as "NoColds" for nothing. Sounds like there is
multiple failures there. Circuit board more than likely is bad, and
refrigerant is certainly low. Sounds to me like it is new Dometic time.

Funny, I've got a 20 year old "Nocold" that works great. Luck of the
draw I guess. If the cooling unit ever gives me problems, I'll slap one
of these on it and keep going:

Seriously, if the box is in good shape, then the "Amish" cooling units
are a better choice than another RV fridge.

I have a 30 year old three way Norcold in the coach. It died about eight
years ago, with the same symptoms. My wife and I took it out of the coach,
removed the cooling coil, turned it upside down and gently beat it with a
plastic hammer, several times. After several "beatings" the coil worked
just fine. There is some sort of special bonding material needed to stick
the colk to the back of the fridge. I found that and it has worked
perfectly ever since. I also checked the wiring to the control panel,
cleaned everything and now everything works, propane, 12vdc, and 120.

My experience with Norcold RV refrigerators has all been with new ones.
Perhaps the older ones were made better. I have heard of the technique of
taking the fridge out, gently tapping on the coil, leaving it lay on the
side, etc. If there were obstructions to the flow of refrigerant, this may
dislodge it, allowing the fridge to once again work. It may work for you,
the cost is negligible if you are doing it yourself. But, my customers
resent my charging them for labor to do things that do not succeed.
Your experience will vary.

My Norcold I installed back in 2002 is still running strong. I did have to replace the door hinges, but other than that, no problems.
I also will go with the Amish cooling unit when that time arrives.

Keep in mind the controllers are still the original.
Call Nick and get the delivered cost on a new , then compare with other
options.
