Am a newbie to the GMC and RV world. I’ve been following the battery upgrade threads and have the following info to help or confuse the conversation.

We (Jan & I) bought the 76 Birchaven in Winlock, WA, Feb 2016 and have been upgrading the Aluminum Falcon (son’s nickname for rig)) from the ’70’s to 2022. We follow the various threads on gmclist, the RV guru sites and magazines, and get (answers and parts from Jim K and Nick G of Applied A; Jim Bounds, DJ Eberhart; Jim Hupy), and talk with the electronic equipment manufactures. Our RV guide and main installer is Todd Lissner (vince.lissner@gmail.com ) of ALL Star RV Repair of Sherwood, OR - (with whom we research, pass the tools and pay the bills).

We’ve been changing the electrical configuration (LEDs have replaced the incandescent fixtures) and now have 5 batteries and solar - 3 lithium for coach and 2 lead for the engine (Lithium 12v 100 Ah batteries (BattleBorn # BB10012)which are being charged by a Progressive Dynamics PD9160ALV 12V converter/charger 60A (will handle 5 lithium batteries) and presently keeping the Progressive Dynamics PD9270V converter/charger 70A w/ charge wizard for the 2 lead Interstate batteries ( GP34 800CA, 1000ca and an Interstate RV 24DC, CCA 550, MCA 700, RC 140) till proven lithium engine batteries become available.

Todd has replaced the original backbone wiring with 0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 gauge, the buzz box with a Progressive dynamics Power center (12 - DC fused blade and 5 AC circuits) w/ auto-switching, Victron Energy BMV-712 Smart Battery Monitor w/ Victron temperature sensor and a Victron SmartShunt 500A/50mV (bluetooth) for the lithium. The Renogy Off Grid 3000W 12VDC to 120VAC Pure sine wave with meter keeps us going when in the boondocks and run the cell phone connection (weBoost Drive X RV with Verizon), wifi, refrigerator (still have the original), along with the solar (Merlin 340w energy kit (2 170W panels), Victron SmartSolar MPT 100/50 charge controller w/bluetooth (programed by BattleBorn, and Victron Orion-TR Smart 12/12V-30A isolated charger (3-stage charger w/ bluetooth for mixed chemistry (lead & lithium) batteries which are presently installed.

Safety upgrades done - especially an auto fire extinguisher system for engine and refrigeration compartments (Jim B), and the alternator safety cable.

My 2-cents additional conversation is: As the world progresses from gasoline motors to electrical - there may even be a GMC upgrade to electrical propulsion in the future since fossil fuel costs are increasing BUT the GMC RV is timeless!

Btw - this rig may have been in Dade county FL - found a paper with that info inside the sliding door.

You lost me at the 2 engine batteries. Why? How are they wired? Hopefully not hard paralleled. 1 premium grade Group 78 flooded side terminal battery is enough to cook the starter if used incorrectly so why more?

What battery voltage are you reading on your BMV after the LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries have been charging for 6 hours or so on shore power?

The reason I am asking is the Progressive Dynamics 9160AVL manufactured after August 2020 is now supposed to float at 13.6V after charging is complete. However fellows over at DIYsolarforum.com are reporting that units purchased as late as July 2021 still output 14.6V forever! That is the Max charge voltage and the charger should shut down or reduce to 13.4-13.6V after that.

Just wondering if your charger reduces its voltage or its an early model that is more like a power supply than a charger.
