I finally, after way too much analysis brooding and reflection figured out a half decent way to mount a remote air cleaner.

My criteria was:
1. It had to be a real air cleaner, not a oiled washable one that in reality never gets washed or oiled
2. It had to be serviceable, changing the filter should not require disassembling anything or suffering too much
3. it must draw in clean fresh cool air
4. The filter must be readily available

I feel this install met all the above, #3 isn't optimal as the inlet is pointing down, but it's off to the side of the radiator and should be clean. I could possibly add ducting of I was so inclined
It uses a Wix 46573 filter out of a 2001 to 2020 Duramax. It has 190 square inches of surface area vs 110 for the stock filter.
This is the outside diameter NOT filter area.
Maybe Jim K can determine the actual filter area.
I used the Spectre hat and their 4" ducting, it worked out well. the jeep hat seems too small and restrictive for my comfort

Here is the bracket. This relocates the air tank closer to the fender allowing room for the filter
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/7303/medium/20210508_105740.jpg

here is how the air tank and filter mount to the bracket
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/7303/20210508_125320.jpg

here they are mounted in the coach
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/7303/20210508_133152.jpg

Here they are from the hood side. the front cover comes off and the filter is 'easily' replaceable

Take a look at the inlet diameter of the OEM snorkle air filter housing. It
is somewhere around 3" in diameter. So with that knowledge firmly within
your grasp, 4" exhaust tubing should be way more than adequate. But, the
"AMERICAN WAY" is always that bigger is better than smaller. But not always
necessary. Just my take on it.

Interesting approach to get more air to your induction system. Nicely done.

I am curious as to the make and model that you used to find your "Spectre hat and their 4" ducting"?

Jon,
well now you know how to do it!
I moved the air tank over exactly that the right mounting bolts lined up with the left bracket holes. The air cleaner was welded insitu and i have zero measurements. But it was shoved uo against the frame as much as possible

RJW, the spectre hat and hose are easily found.
Here is the hat on Amazon

James, they make bigger filters! This was basically the best compromise I almost made my own housing

Keith
I have a K&N filter and want to change to a paper style replacement
Do you know what that air box came out of as it looks like it is something i could work with
when i search duramax i get a lot of different options but none of them show the
round cylindrical housing you have in your photos

A quick compatibility check online shows Wix 46573 came out of a mid 2000s gm van. Pics of the air box look about the same also. I didn't come out of a Duramax pickup as those air boxes are square.

I did have a round air box out of a 2 ton truck with a Duramax but I think that was a larger tube and bigger filter.

Does that air box get rid of the intake drone? If so I might need to try something similar.

A van does sound familiar

and yes the cab is WAY quieter with the new air cleaner. I think it's the solid aluminum hat and the fact that the actual air intake is quite a ways away from the floor.
I can't imagine that a sheetmetal air cleaner doesn't make a great sounding board!

Looking at assemblies on line there also appears to be a resonator tube that plugs into that air box. May quiet it down even more.

It's close, mine had a different end where it connects to the air cleaner.
yours may work, That elbow looks nice, but the resonator would take up a lot of space. I'd remove it
Also check that the elbow is 4" so the hose will connect
