Hi Emory,

These soft start boxes are way different from start capacitors. Yes, if the start cap is bad it should be replaced.

These boxes allow a properly functioning roof AC unit to start with half the start up amps of a unit without the soft start box. Since start amps are considerably higher than the amp draw running, they often allow a smaller gen to run the roof AC units.

I use variable frequency drives to power three phase motors on my woodworking equipment to run from single phase power. One side benefit is the user can program the start draw ramp. For example, I run European three phase motors at 50 hz (which they were designed for) instead of 60 hz standard in the US. The result is the motors run cooler, quieter and a bit slower. I often program the ramp to keep the max amp draw below 8 or 9 amps even on 5 HP motors that would draw way more than that on their own.

The technology is similar to that used in these soft start boxes allowing single phase motors running on single phase power to start with a lower amp draw.

Often a failing or failed motor start capacitor will cause the problem. Replacement of a bad capacitor is a much cheaper fix.

These units were very popular in the micro mini Toyota based motor home community of which I used to be part of. It allowed one 13.5K btu A/C unit to run off of a Honda or clone 2000 watt inverter generator that some guys carried in their storage compartment, if not equipped with an onboard generator. They do work. If using a small generator just be mindful of power management, ie no A/C and microwave, coffeepot, etc at the same time.

With a soft start installed, would the noise level of the compressor on start up be less than without the soft start?

Might be good for AC's installed in the bedroom if it is quieter. I know the low profile Coleman's can be a little noisy on compressor startup.

Scott,

The poly-phase motors I have are an much nicer start, so I would guess so...
