moving the front air conditioner [message #327270]

I am replacing my front roof air conditioner. I am also considering moving it to the front ceiling vent hole.
By doing this I hope to run it while traveling if the road air isn't handling the heat. I have heard of others
doing this and I am wondering if it is worth the extra work involved in moving it? Does moving it foreword
get cool air to the drivers and passengers area?

Doug,
That is a great way to solve the issue you have, however relying on the
generator can be risky.
I like to think we know what need to be done to the origional Onan to make
it dependable for that application.
I tend to rely on the generator like a spare tire, it is a must to have
but not to be used to a point of where one depends on it so much.
There is an option of adding a lower dash unit up front that does not take
much floor space that does a great job of cooling. There are few
manufactures that supply them and we have had great success with them.
Since we sell lot of new Roof units and the Aux. dash units, we do not care
which way you go.
I help people that have purchased units from others and seeking help and
info.
Hope this has helped you in some way.

I have the luxery of having Nick,Gary, Grace and the internet to take

What JimK is saying true except. ..... I replaced my original generator with a
Honda EV6010 because Onan was not dependable in my view. In addition, I had
JimB "TEE" in an under dash A/C unit. That was 14 to 15 years ago. I regularly
use either or both units on the roads here in Florida as needed. If you can't or
don't regularly use these units, you are not saving them. You are actually hurting
them. Use them or lose them.

I have the basically the same issue as Charles. However the listing on your website seems to show the Vintage A/C is for 73 to 76. When we had our previous GMC I had installed a EV6010 so we could run the roof air reliably any time we needed extra cooling. Is there some reason I could not install a Vintage A/C in my current 1977.

We put a curtain up behind the drive and passenger seat to just contain heat in the winter and cool in the summer. The curtain comes together at the steps into the cockpit. It is a very lightweight material, but it is amazing how cool/warm it keeps the drivers compartment when closed. Down side is, you can't see out the inside rear view mirror, but then that is why you've got the out side mirrors. Also doubles as a privacy curtain in the evenings at campgrounds. A simple, and cheap upgrade and no need to run the generator or front roof AC. Just what we did.

The reason why we left the 77 and 78 off the list is that we have found
that those years the dash a/c works lot better and when tuned up properly
does not need help.
However, there is no reason why one cannot do so.

Charles,
Here is another option and what i did and and am pleased with. I made a simple duct from the front vent of the front A/C to over the driver /passenger area. It is approx 2"x6"x 30"long and is inserted in the A/C outlet and attached to the curtain track over the drivers seat. Constructed of foam core board and painted to match the headliner.

I'm sure that WHEN my Onan quits working that I will replace it with something more reliable.
Notice, I didn't say if. I said when. Until then I won't talk about the Onan because sure
enough if I do, it won't work the next time I need it. I sure would like to hear from someone
who has the unit in the front hole. How well has that worked for you? I tried the ducting for
a while but the old unit was working so poorly (low Freon) that I didn't get much benefit from
the duct system.

If the Onan plants are maintained and exercised according to their
maintenence schedule, they will last longer than you will. My advise to you
would be to use the shower curtain across the cabin area, it really does
work well.

We can close this subject.
THERE IS NO SUPPORT FRAME AROUND THE FRONT HOLE ON MY COACH.
I AM NOT GOING TO INSTALL A FRAME AT THIS TIME.
NEW UNIT GOES WHERE THE OLD UNIT WAS.

When we install an a/c unit where the frame is not existing, one can use a
pieces of wood to create a frame.
Since the unit will compress the wood to the upper skin and the interior
headliner, it works well.
That is what the SOB guys do to their unit.
