Ok GMC Gurus,

One casuality of my recent 4,500 mile trip was the turn signal switch at the steering column. I need to replace the old worn switch, but I recall a different version that has turning lamps provision. I hope to use that version to control my left and right side cameras. Does anyone recall the part number for such a turn signal switch? Anyone?

I found this:

http://gmcmotorhome.info/chassis.html#TURN

TURN SIGNAL SWITCH
AutoZone part number SW326 or SW327.

This is a very common turn signal switch used by GM on vehicles of that
era. It is not GMC motorhome specific.
These are made by Wells. The difference in the two numbers is that one
also included a set of contacts for cornering lights. The cornering
lights are actually a separate connector that plugs into the same switch
that you do not have to use. Wells is actually the manufacturer of the
switch for Delco (GM) . My Wells switch came with the Delco inscription
on the plastic molding.

The problem you will run into is there was two different plugs used on
the connector depending on the year the coach was made. One is slightly
longer and will not plug in. These part numbers from Autozone come with
an adapter to fit both cable connector styles. MAKE SURE THERE IS AN
ADAPTER IN THE BOX WHEN YOU BUY IT. You may need it.

If yours is the opposite plug type and you do not want to use the
adapter, you can remove the pins from the old plastic plug and insert
the new cable pins into it. The pins are the same only the plastic
housing is different.

I replaced mine just over a year ago. From Ken Burton at the time, SW326 is with cornering lights and SW327 is without.

My parts guy crossed the SW326 (with cornering lights) to a Blue Streak TW8. For some reason, with the extra corning light contacts it was less money!

The same is true on the Wells switches from AZ. The one with cornering lights is a few dollars cheaper.

I recently purchased the AIRTEX/WELLS 1S3020 (SW326) Turn Signal Switch from Rockauto. Glad to know it has the cornering light option if it's ever needed. The one minor annoyance was that the connector plug didn't mate to the socket on my 76 Royale steering column. I had to extract all the pins and insert them into the old plug. An adapter is available but I don't want extra hardware that doubles the number of connections.

Yes that is a problem and it appears to be random on which coaches got which connector type installed. Actually the switch fits most GMCs without moving the pins. On the others moving the pins is the easiest solution. I always check the plug mating BEFORE pulling the wire down through the steering column. It is as lot easier to change them not mounted and in your hand rather than doing it standing on your head under the dash.
