Today the FMCA magazine arrived, bringing with it another reminder of how
unique the GMC really is::

After reading everything of interest, such as the article on the
$2,000,000+ Newell (which did NOT make me drool), I scanned the
classifieds. Originally, because I was bored, but then something struck
me: All of the ads, except for the '77 & '78 GMC seemed to be for 2003 and
later SOB's! Sure 'nuff, during a careful re-scan, I found only one '92
American Eagle and one '91 Foretravel. ALL the others were '03 to '16
models!

What's become of all those "old" SOB's??? Dried up & blown away? Junked?
Set fire to by totally disgusted owners?

They are on Craigslist. They are more than 10 years old so FMCA is the wrong venue. Laughing

Read the same article and then thought that a few hundred bucks here and there for the GMC was not so bad after all.

200 gallons of diesel to fill that new coach up, and calculating just that cost was enough to re affirm Im happy with my "old camper".

Wayne,
Did you consider that 200 gallons will take a 40 foot 30,000 GVW
diesel pusher with 4 slides 1600 to 2000 miles till they have to fill up
again? How many gallons and how many stops would you take to drive 2000
miles in your GMC?

Look at it in terms of DEPRECIATION. A base Marathon Prevost coach with no
interior lists for 1 million, 200 thousand dollars. You can have the BASIC
interior for another 800 thousand. Out the door, ready to go, a cool 2
million. That sucker depreciates more in the first two years than most of
us have in our GMC's. Try buying some of those 20 inch 10 ply Michelin
tires. Oil changes? Service? Out of my league for sure. Heck, the interest
on the financing is more than a GMC costs.

At least they can stop almost anywhere for service. Unlike the gmc where
you need to find a specialist.

I rented the diesel pusher I described and put 1800 miles on it in 6 days.
I bought a GMC 10 months later after 3 months shopping for one.
The 2005 sold for $75,000, down from $200,000, with 65,000 miles, while I
was shopping but I really wanted a GMC.

And how many of those SOB's have a Blacklist group like ours?
I may upgrade, but it will be to my GMC's and/or my Toad's, not to SOB's.

The black list is critical to our specialized antiquated GMCs. Not
necessary when any diesel shop can work on your sob pusher because it
shares drivetrains common in the trucking / bus industry.

Just sayin

IF you can find a truck shop that will work on a motorhome. I've heard
many tales of truck shops that won't touch one. Including the largest shop
locally, whose owner told the tale of the mechanic who quit when he
insisted that the employee work on a friend's: "I ain't workin' on no d...
motorhome!" :-)

I only took $100,000 depreciation on the 40' SOB we had for 9 years (aside
from all the repairs & improvements I made), but I still figure it cost us
more than the total cost of the GMC over the past 19 years.

You want to drive a million dollar motorhome? Rent it.
You don't have to pay storage for something you only would drive a few weeks in a year.

Wayne,
Did you consider that 200 gallons will take a 40 foot 30,000 GVW
diesel pusher with 4 slides 1600 to 2000 miles till they have to fill up
again? How many gallons and how many stops would you take to drive 2000
miles in your GMC?

I had one 10k service cost about $1500 basically an oil change and all the filters in our SOB
One of the reasons we sold it and bought another GMC.

Why do we seem to need to change engines or transmissions so often? I would
think we should be able to get 150K miles between rebuilds.

Ken,

Does that include the shades that Elaine bought?
Just wondering.

John,
As long as it's a quality rebuild, I think 150,000 would not be unrealistic. A cheap rebuild,,well who knows.........
I guess that's the difference between a $2,500 rebuild vs a $7,500 rebuild.

I believe JR Slatten has 360,000 miles on his factory engine
