I would get out my tape measure and measure your current gen compartment physical size. Then measure the required dimensions of the Onan for a semi-enclosed compartment. This is in the Onan installation manual. That should make your decision easier.

The heathen chinese 7500 from Harbor Freight will fit. It will also fit the 23'. Currently $529 on sale, figure an extra hundred for baffles, a pulse fuel pump, exhaust extension, etc. Here's how it was done in a 23' :

I'm giving thought to a large battery bank (maybe lithium) and this:

Johnny, is there a write-up that goes with the photo?
If I wanted to copy what you did I would at least want to know what you
were doing rather than just remove and replace the genset.
Why was the panel modified? What does the pulse line do and how does it do
it? Did you convert to electric start? How?

Lessee. It comes with an electric self - commencer, I used the 7500 because it was the littlest one they had with an electric starter. The way I mounted it the yanker cranker was accessible, so you could fit one of the smaller ones manually cranked. Given that the smaller engine has a casting for a starter pad, depending how good a machinist you are you could fit a starter to a smaller one. Ken Henderson found a TroyBilt with the smaller mill and electric start.
The panel was modified because I was too lazy to take a piece of plate and make one. Which I'm sure the N.O. has done. I gave him the Jukerac which the space was initially cut for. The 23' genset bay is smaller than the 26', so baffling and perhaps placement will be different. Exhaust will be as well. There was a short pipe from engine to muffler, I cut it in half and had a local welder put short pipe sections on each end. They're connected with any length of flexible stainless exhaust tubing from Advance or elsewhere.
The pulse pump is necessary to fuel the set, you cannot use an electric pump. The pressure of even the lowest will overcome the carb and flood the engine. The pulse pump is common to larger lawn mowers and works well here. ten bux or less on eBay. Eventual plans were to pick up the crankcase pulses someplace else, but again time dictated the approach I used. Checking the oil is cumbersome. Beyond that it works well.
The writeup would likely be a catalog of somewhat original cursewords. Note the placement of the outboard cooling fan. It was there when I got the coach, and was a consideration when locating the set.
Had I kept the coach I'd have made some minor mods... a solenoid on the choke - or at least a pull rod. A panel made for the space. Which would dictate a better overall wiring layout in the compartment. Different baffling for the cooling air. Note that I was able to get a lot of space around the exhaust pipe, I consider it necessary. Pay attention to the airflow through the alternator. Straightforward 'in the door out the bottom' doesn't address the flow through the alternator, which is opposite to the engine. In the contractor frame it blows out the bottom and the engine air out the back. When we put sides on it changes. I was contemplating a short piece of flex hose on the rear of the alternator routed properly. Your routing and baffling stuff will be different.
Another mod I'd do on the 23' is relocate the air filter. Remoting it will shut it up some, and put all the service ports on the door side of the genset bay. You might even consider a silencer on the hose, input moan at load is a substantial point of the noise it makes. Wasn't so bad in the coach, the set was under the bathroom. If next door was close he might of not liked it. If his A/C was on he wouldn't notice it.

John, I dunno how the CA smog set differs, but HF offers it as 49 state and CA compliant. I doubt there's much difference.

Ca has traditionally required more stringent smog control.
One of the main reason we do not have a lot of old cars is if they do not
pass smog you cannot license them and in a lot of areas if they are visible
from the street and unlicenced you get a ticket. There is a non-operational
registration but most of the population is subject to penalties if it is
registered non-op and visible.
I selected a 1975 because it does not require a smog check each year like a
1976 would.
All that said if it is ok here then it should be ok everywhere.

To park my GMC in my backyard I have to have it on a slab and registered.
I am not supposed to drive on unpaved surfaces to get to the slab. I
promised the inspector that I would not take it out when the dirt between
the slab and the driveway was wet and that it would only happen a few times
a year. He said he would not report me but someone else may and I may have
to put two-foot wide concrete drive strips in for the 60-feet from the
driveway to the parking slab.

I live here for the weather. I moved into this house in 1974 but there are
times I think about getting out of here.

That's the sort of bureaucratic outlook which helped me each time someone offered a job in Ca. "No, thanks, whyncha call Soandso..."

Where is this place that has these guidelines for parking
recreational vehicles? Inspectors? Perhaps a planned community?

John,
I do lot of Smog for our customers and I find that if the engine is half
way running, it passes the test.
Should it not pass, it tells me it is not working at optimum.
I say that as long as your keeping the unit running in half way good shape
smog is not an issue every other year.
People misunderstand why it failes, and we need to re adjust.

Jim,
The specs are a lot looser for the older engines. The newer engines have to
be pretty clean to pass.
Rich,
When I moved into Sacramento County I felt like there were a lot of rules
that I thought were absurd coming from Idaho. Rancho Cordova became a city
and most of the board of supervisors live in HOAs some of them gated. They
have changed zoning and done about all they could to make the rest of the
city more like an HOA. This spring the limited the concrete in our front
yards to 40% and imposed a 5-foot setback from side property line. I live
on a corner lot with a very little front yard. The last day before the
zoning package went into effect I poured a 5-foot wide concrete strip next
to my property line. I had set up to have a company come in and replace my
driveway with a wider driveway over to my property line. 2-days before I
poured he told me they could not make the date.

John,

We spent 3 years ('71-'74) in Sacramento (across from Cresta Park in Arden
Park area). Other than having to comply with reasonable requirements when
I installed central air conditioning, I had no contact with regulators. We
considered that one of the most pleasant of the 18 places we lived during
my 23 years in USAF. With things as you describe them now, I couldn't
possibly live there. While our neighborhood is entirely different than
yours, with 1-1/2+ acre lots, the 50'x16'x12' RV shelter and the 40'
Sea-Land container storage building are now central to my life.

There's a vacant house next door at the moment if you want to move. :-)

What's the arguing price for the place next door? I'd have GMC friendly neighbors. We've a subdivision which has been build down the highway with what appears to be an aggressive HOA. A bit of research showed the roads are County roads, so my neighbor and I 'adjusted' their sense of perspective with my GMC and his junk contractor truck for a couple of days. They now understand the Southern country outlook of a man's home is his property to do with as he sees fit.

Johnny,

It's not yet on the market, still tied up in divorce proceedings,I think.
Should go for about $125,000, maybe less, considering the probable
condition of the interior. 3 BR, 2-1/2 Bath, about 2000 sf on about 1-1/2
acre. Most of the neighborhood is $200,000+. I'm not sure whether it's in
the city or county. Our peculiar neighborhood is mixed -- I'm out, but the
neighbor on the other side is in. They asked at closing whether I wanted
"In" or "Out". I don't know whether "In" is revocable.
