Morning,

my sparetire is mounted in such a way the adding a bike rack is
cumbersome, so I want to eliminate the outside spare tire and follow the
idea of putting it under the bed.

Anyone see an issue in utilizing

https://www.thetford-europe.com/product/service-door-6/

in the back of the GMC to provide entry to the space below the bed in my 23'

Peer,

This will give you an idea what's behind the fiberglass of the rear cap.
You must go above that rear tub rail--there is a channel on the body that
fits around it for attachment.

In the USA, at least, they sell bike racks that strap to a rear-mounted
tire. I have one and have carried two bikes on it without issue. This
picture, from a rally in 2005, shows it (sort-of).

Thanks for the pics, Richard, the URLs worked

My issue with the spare tire is two fold:

1) I *really* like the idea of not having the tire on the outside :-)

2) It is currently mounted to the right side of the coach, which
prohibits the use for a bike rack. I am sure I can remount the spare
tire holder more into the middle. I am not too sure if it will be strong
enough to hold two bikes.

Jerry Work fabricated a bike carrier that fit around the spare tire. It
carried the folding bicycles that he had at the time many thousands of
miles, and they did not bounce or shake. I followed him many miles and had
a great view of that carrier. It now resides on another GMC owners spare
tire, I have followed that one too. It was a simple band that installed by
deflating the tire, slipping the band around the tire, positioning it where
one preferred, then inflating the tire again. It fit like O.J.s glove. I
don't have any pictures, but, Jerry might have posted some to the GMC Photo
site.

The service door you linked to needs at least 23mm thickness of the material it is mounted in, so you will have to add material to the GMC tail panel. Make sure your compartment is vapor and insect proof, don't rely on just the door seals.

The stock steel wheel and tire weighs about 70 pounds. I'm not thinking
another 45 pounds of bikes will make that much difference, especially if
you now have aluminum wheels, which takes off about 20 pounds.

I predict you'll wish that space under the bed was available for other
things.

I do recall a Canadian fellow who eliminated both the generator and the
propane and created a pass-through storage accessible through the hatches.
I saw it at a rally in Delaware about 9 years ago.

Peer,
This might not work for you, but this is how i handle the spare tire and bike carrier. First, if you have a good 4 bag rear suspension you don't need a spare as you already have two that you know are good, and I have traveled several hundred miles on five wheels without any issues. Of course you have to carry that flat tire somewhere which in my case is just on the floor inside the door. As my coach is a 26' rear bath Royal and you have a 23' with less weight it should work with less worry. Now expect that someone will point out that this a very dangerous thing to do as we are exceeding the tire rating, but using little common sense with tire inflation and weight distribution it should get you to a tire shop. If I want to carry another spare I have a Alcoa wheel and tire that i hoist with a piece of rope while standing next to my storage pod and store it within the pod. 50# not that hard. As for the bikes i have a mount that goes on the tow bar/ receiver hitch.
