just an update: we've gotten to use the new fan in action with some huge long climbs over a few days
of arduous driving. I can only say I'm really impressed with the fan. It comes on when it should,
does its job quickly and effectively, and then shuts off. As if that weren't enough, it's a good bit
quieter than the stock fan and seems to put much less load on the engine. With our old fan,
when it came on it sounded and felt like the transmission was dying, and it was always a huge relief
when, or IF, it would go off. You can certainly tell when the new one comes on, but it's more of a whir than a roar.
And, having battled endless bad fan clutches, we can't help but smile every time it does.
I'm controlling it via the EBL EFI computer, which has a few parameters one can set. I'll draw up a
wiring diagram, etc, when I have more time.

We've only had it a short while so can't attest to longevity, but if the build quality is any indication,
I expect it to work for the rest of our ownership of this vehicle. I would not hesitate to install
one again. I'm quite sure I've spent more over the years on crappy thermostatic fan clutches that
either never worked correctly or failed quickly than I spent on this lovely thing. And although I got
very quick at changing the fan clutch with a hot engine on the side of the road, I will not mind retiring that
particular skill... Smile

The old factory set up tends to engage when you crest the hill because you lift throttle and the engine speed drops which toggles the engagement at or near threshold. If the hill were longer more severe it would (should) eventually engage but slightly later in time. If you lift and reopen throttle you can trick it to engage sooner if at or near engagement point. Howerver when pulling grade in the good RPM range you don't want to lift and drop below power curve so counter intuitive. Remember the clutch is thermal but also limits power transmission and max fan speed depending on temp. If there was a good supply of USA Delco parts this electric controled device adaptation would not have been driven by necessity. Good alternative way to go.
As far as coming on above 45 MPH -- yes they do that if need be in severe conditions. Theory is poor hot air flow exit at speed caused by high pressure getting up under the engine room. Back in 76 my friend had a new 76 L82 Corvette. Same issue. At cruise in hot weather the temp would creep higher, fan would engage for about 60 secs and pull temp back to stat point. This would repeat every few minutes at highway cruise. Not sure but perhaps same fan clutch part number? Attributed to poor natural air flow as no front grill and only bottom feeder design. Also the theory is constant cycling at road speed works the clutch hard as there is still speed differential and heat generated in the clutch that has to be disipated by the heat sink fins on the casting running in an already hot air stream.

Can you install the fan without pulling the radiator?

There's no need to take the radiator out. You >will< have to remove the fan shroud and modify it by cutting the hole bigger in it if you have the newer style fan shroud. If you have the 'horse collar' it will have to go away and a new style shroud fitted. Jimmy The K has them in two pieces for easy installation.
If, like me, you've done something unsmart like bend the new trans cooler lines a little early you may have to take them loose. If you have the stock cooler lines, the shroud will come out if you unclip them and hold the out of the way. Once my water pump project is over, my new fan goes on.

If you have the Horse Collar, you remove the steel collar and run it
without it and nothing else to modify.
Should you have the all plastic type, you trim the lip around the round
opening about 1 1/2 " all around .
So it is not a big project .

Well, that was not actually good either, Went to your album list instead of the album itself. Try this:

for-gmc.html

To get the album instead of a 404, simply 'Copy' the url, including the second line in the copy, then 'paste'in your browser. Optionally, when the original gives a 404 error, append 'for-gmc.html' to the end of the address line.

Tom's fan album works correctly now. If you've already viewed these photos,
to make it work in the correct order now, you'll have to clear your history
cache prior to viewing again.
I apologize for it being so difficult to get them in the correct order.

Would someone post a photo of this modification. Sounds like a winter project.

Here's our installation:

It was a pretty easy install. The hardest part was the wiring because I was using the EBL EFI fuel injection computer instead of Tom's setup, so took a little more time to figure out. One of the best mods I've ever done to the coach.

I have been told that the controller for the Mercedes Fan Clutch sends a frequency signal to start and stop the fan, and that you cannot wire the fan leads directly into an EFI system dry contact output or an ON-OFF switch without the controller. Is that correct?

The reason I'm asking is that I wanted to have a fan along on my trip to the Tucson rally for backup and while Applied has the fans, they will not have controllers available for another two weeks.

No, Bill, that information is in error. The clutch engages with 12 volts and ground, and disengages when the 12V or the ground is removed.

That being said, there is a means of recovering fan speed from the clutch, using the three unused wires on the connector. Mercedes - and the other manufacturers use thi information to regulate the fan speed... in order to squeeze the last iota of efficiency for CAFE purposes. Doing this on our coaches is being evaluated as I write. It's my gut reaction that it will complicate the system with little or no benefit in a GMC, but I'm ready to change that opinion should the evaluation reveal some value. Keep watching this space.

That being said, if you feed the three unused pins 12 volts and ground, the third will produce a pulse train whose repetition rate is directly proportional to the fan RPM. It will produce six pulses per revolution. If you divide this by 2, you can feed the resulting pulse train to a tachometer set of a 6 cylinder engine and the tach will read true fan speed.
