Hello,

On the odd chance that anyone heading to Elkhart next week has a spare set of Ramco mirrors... I'd be a buyer.

That's a deal - they're big and expensive to ship.

Yep - saving on shipping is part of my agenda. The other is saving in brokerage charges and the 15% combined federal and provincial value-added tax.

Jim I will give Applied a call this PM to discuss the alternatives. My take is that since I will be the sole driver (my wife point blank refuses) there's not much point in paying a premium to get remote adjusting capabilities. Once they're set I won't need to be fiddling with them. Do other Ramco users feel I am correct in this assumption? Also, same feeling about heating - I will be mostly driving in warm weather so am not sure I need this feature. Am I missing something?

I agree with heating, I had heated mirrors on a car and yes it was nice in janurary but otherwise not useful.

Power mirrors however, are great, you can tweek them if you adjust your seat and move them when parking to see where the wheels are etc.

This is especially true for the pass side. in case someone bumps them.

Gordon,

My wife has done several seminars on "Ladies, drive the coach" at GMCMI
gatherings. Once thing she always stresses is properly
adjusting the mirrors. Getting comfortable in the coach is very important
to feeling secure about driving. And what happens on
a trip if you should go down from an accident or health problems. None of
us are immortal.
Another consideration is if you should decide to sell the coach, the next
owner will conclude those mirrors are a liability that must
be replaced at considerable expense.
Also, when driving at night, if you get some nitwit behind you with his high
beams in your mirror, you can point it elsewhere.
I rest my case.

I don't think there are many used ones available, but you never know. Maybe
get one off a bid SOB unit and find out the mounting brackets do not match
and the mirror is bigger than standard.

I have the power only ones and use the right one all the time when parking to get it as close to the curb without the grinding the wheels.

I've had the current coach a year, and have touched the power button once when I got in it in LA. I had manual ones on the 23' (Actually they were power but never hooked up) and adjusted them once in Bradenton FL when I picked it up. I am in the process of mounting small cameras ($8 from Banggood) on each side of the coach because the mirrors aren't in the wiper arc and consequently in the rain at night you can't tell where the cars are beside you.

Likewise...about the cameras that is.

I had hoped that the wireless backup camera I have that feeds my Garmin 770 GPS would provide an answer to this problem, but I can't really see what's behind me that well....to say nothing of what's coming up on the sides.

So do tell!

PS - all of the persuasive arguments have prompted me to go with the powered option - not that this will ever get my wife into the drivers seat.

Maybe you'll be surprised. The first thing my wife asked for on the GMC,
and possible the ONLY thing in 19 years, was remotely controlled mirrors.
She HAS driven a FEW times. The last time, several years ago now, she gave
out of gas on I-75 in Atlanta. :-(

Maybe your wife will take driving lessons at a GMCMI Convention, making her
like the idea better.

Lemme point out, Paula doesn't drive the coach. We use the power mirrors in her Town and Country regularly though when we switch drivers. They're useful when both of you drive.
As to the cameras, They're little square 12 volt cameras with analog video out. Look like maybe production overruns from dome security cams. Banggood had them for eight dollars, I got three. Ebay has outdoor mounts - small black plastic triangular boxes - two for sixteen dollars. I figure to stick them on with two sided tape and run the wires through the toll windows till I find the right spot to mount them permanently. I'm looking for two analog split screen switches, one horizontal and one vertical. Put the side cams split vertically into the bottom of the horizontal split and the backup cam into the top of it. The radio/GPS has a video input to use.

Mirrors? What do you need mirrors for. Just hang out in the left lane, and
drive 80. Works for Jim K. (Grin)
