Not sure you need a reader. The OBD I protocols do not give a lot of information. The main use is to determine an error code which can be done manually by using a jumper (paper clip works) between terminal A and B. The trouble light will then blink. The blinks will correspond to the trouble code. You can google how to do this.
If you really want to get lots of feedback from the computer, then install the EBL upgrade and you can attach laptop that will give you lots of information about what is going on. In my opinion, although a bit more pricey it is a better investment than an OBD1 reader.

If you have the unit dated Nov. 13 , then you have access to all that is
happening in the WUD (whats up display) so you will see more there than a
code reader.
The EBL has so much more advances built in than any other system out there.
That is one of the reason you gain milage and performance with the unit and
most parts are GM so they are readily available.
